Hello Friends and Partners -
Last month, Mayor Durkan fulfilled one of the key commitments of her 2018 Climate Action Strategy: she transmitted legislation aimed at moving all Seattle homes off oil heat and into high-efficiency electric heat pumps. Oil heat is the least efficient, most expensive, and most polluting form of home heating in Seattle. Upgrading all Seattle homes currently on oil heat to electric heat pumps is expected to reduce Seattle’s climate emissions at the same level as taking 90,000 cars off the streets for one year! Our office is already getting calls from other cities wanting to learn more about how to tackle this challenge in their communities. The momentum to move away from fossil fuels continues to grow and I'm thrilled that we get to be a part of it. As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support.
The power of concerned Americans coming together to make change continues to grow and is shining a light on topics--such as racial and gender equity--that were issues long before the presidential election. Momentum for climate action grew significantly last year and shows no sign of dropping off, despite the federal government's attempts to derail it. I'm thrilled to be serving under a Mayor who believes in science and is committed to Seattle's leadership role on climate.
