The Office of Labor Standards (OLS) announces that it has initiated a door-to-door campaign to provide additional education and support to Seattle businesses.
OLS has dedicated two Engagement Specialists who will visit local businesses in order to spread the word about Seattle’s labor laws. The Engagement Specialists will answer questions and distribute workplace posters and other outreach materials to assist with employer compliance.
For example, OLS Engagement Specialist Ahmed Abdi (pictured on the right) spoke with Farah Ismail, owner of the Banana Grill Restaurant in South Seattle, about city labor standards.
"We appreciate the OLS visit. We are keeping up with all labor standards in our city and we know that it is important to follow the law and treat our employees with respect," said Mr. Ismail.
This door-to-door campaign was launched two months ago. It has already reached over 100 local employers in in Queen Anne, Ballard, West Seattle, Greenwood and the South Seattle/Rainier Valley area. Those businesses provide a wide range of services, including food service, retail, healthcare, repair services, finance, and insurance.
This most recent initiative reflects OLS’s expanded efforts to educate as many of Seattle’s businesses as possible. OLS has recently increased its outreach staff and plans to bring on an Outreach Manager to help coordinate these efforts. (Information on this new position may be found here).
“It is imperative that we help Seattle businesses understand the City’s labor laws before there is a problem,” said OLS Director Martin S. Garfinkel. “Along with our other existing outreach efforts, door-to-door outreach brings a “personal touch” that can be help businesses understand their legal obligations.”
