At their August 4 meeting, The Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing Members will take action to establish two special committees and adopt the corresponding charters. The two limited-term committees, to be known as the East Waterway Strategy Seattle Harbor Committee and the East Waterway Strategy Tacoma Harbor Committee, will study, discuss strategies and provide recommendations on the currently pending future uses of NWSA licensed properties in Seattle’s East Waterway and the impacts and risks to the NWSA and homeports.
During the meeting, Managing Members will also hear a first reading on a new lease agreement with ConGlobal Industries, LLC at Terminals 106 West and 108.
NWSA staff will also provide a briefing to review the year-to-date financial performance and summary.

HMM Shipping Line is strengthening its long-term commitment to the Tacoma Harbor through a major investment in Washington United Terminals that will increase the terminal’s cargo capacity by nearly 50% and position the NWSA gateway to serve larger container vessels well into the future. The project will increase annual cargo-handling capacity at WUT from approximately 590,000 TEUs to 880,000 TEUs, while improving operational efficiency across the terminal.
This investment includes the replacement of two aging ship-to-shore cranes and the addition of two rubber-tire gantry cranes as part of a broader modernization effort currently underway at the terminal.
These enhancements will help strengthen supply chains, support jobs and keep our gateway competitive for years to come. Read the full announcement.
Full exports through the NWSA gateway were up 1.8% through June against the five-year average. June 2026 total container volume reached 262,546 twenty-foot equivalent units, down 4.4% compared to June 2025.
The NWSA breakbulk volume increased 22.1% through June due to strong industrial demand. Year-to-date breakbulk cargo has reached 222,529 metric tons. Read More.

The awards honor customers and supply chain partners that make a lasting impact on economic growth and environmental stewardship in the Seattle-Tacoma gateway. The award category nominees announced include Importer of the Year, Exporter of the Year, Environmental Stewardship Award and Supply Chain Partner of the Year.

At the annual GreenTech conference in June, the NWSA once again received certification of its Green Marine program participation. Green Marine is North America's leading voluntary environmental certification initiative for the maritime industry. For Green Marine certification, ports, shipyards and other program participants must complete annual self-assessments, undergo independent third-party verification and publicly report their environmental performance.
In 2025, the NWSA achieved the program's highest performance level in five of eight applicable indicators. Highlights from this year include advancement in the community relations indicator and top performances in aquatic ecosystems, air and greenhouse gas emissions and stormwater management indicators. These results reflect continued leadership across priority environmental areas and commitment to work above and beyond regulatory requirements. Click here to see the results.
Earlier this month, the NWSA hosted leaders from across the freight ecosystem at Terminal 46 to help shape the Electrifying Drayage Alliance’s 2030 action roadmap for the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma.
Organized by The Climate Pledge and Smart Freight Centre, the roundtable brought together cargo owners, logistics providers, carriers, infrastructure providers, ports, policymakers and technology leaders to identify the practical actions needed to accelerate electric drayage deployment.
The NWSA is actively working towards deployment of zero-emission trucks in our gateway as soon as possible and are helping drayage fleets make the transition to zero-emission vehicles by expanding access to educational and free technical assistance through our Zero-Emission Drayage Assistance Program.
