The Northwest Seaport Alliance, alongside terminal operator partner SSA Terminals, celebrated the completion of two strategic infrastructure projects at Terminal 5: a modernized gate complex that doubles truck queuing capacity and expanded refrigerated container capacity.
These multimillion-dollar upgrades improve truck flow and terminal efficiency, reduce congestion and supports Washington’s agricultural exporters by increasing capacity for temperature-sensitive exports. This means smoother operations, better support for perishable cargo and a stronger gateway in the Pacific Northwest.
These projects are among the final efforts to complete the Terminal 5 Modernization Program, a major upgrade to ensure the facility is big-ship ready and competitive in a global market.

January 2026 breakbulk volumes reached 34,134 metric tons, an increase of 42.2% due to increased vessel calls vs. January 2025 because of timing.
Total container volume (international and domestic) in January reached 228,166 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), down 13.9% compared to January 2025, when shippers were frontloading cargo ahead of expected tariffs. Full imports decreased 16%. Full exports were flat, but up 10.2% over January 2022 when exports were impacted by equipment and capacity shortages.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance joined the Port of Benton, Port of Pasco and Port of Walla Walla in signing an interlocal agreement to develop an Inland Logistics Hub in the Tri-Cities region of southeastern Washington. The partnership establishes a framework for joint efforts to enhance international trade, expand cargo movement and strengthen Washington state’s supply chain infrastructure.
The envisioned Inland Logistics Hub will leverage existing regional assets, including available industrial-zoned land and access to Class I railroads and major highways with direct connections to the coastal seaport. The hub will also support the development of new logistics capabilities, including intermodal transfer operations, distribution and warehousing facilities and barge facilities with access to the Columbia-Snake River system.
The ports view an Inland Logistics Hub as a vehicle to drive increased economic development and job creation across urban and rural Washington communities, improve export access for eastern Washington agricultural and industrial products, and attract new businesses involved in global trade to the state.
