Pacific Maritime Association agreement at Terminal 46, Terminal 5 Modernization Project update and 2021 key strategic initiatives top Tuesday meeting

At their March. 2 meeting, The Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing Members will consider the first reading of an agreement with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) at Terminal 46 in Seattle. The PMA is an integral part of the marine cargo industry providing on-going labor training, which provides services supporting the NWSA gateway’s customers and terminal operators. The agreement outlines Terminal 46 as the location for the Pacific Maritime Association’s new state-of-the-art training facility for longshore workers, clerks, foremen, and other maritime positions.

The meeting will also include an update on the Terminal 5 modernization project in the Seattle Harbor. With construction adjustments announced during February, the update will provide information regarding construction changes and current progress for north and south berths.

Managing Members will be asked to authorize additional funds for the Washington United Terminals (WUT) Crane Power Addition Project at the Tacoma Harbor. The agenda also includes an update on NWSA’s 2021 Key Strategic Initiatives along with the recently released NWSA financial scorecard. View the full agenda.

The virtual meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. Meetings are streamed live from the alliance’s website.

The NWSA welcomes new Wan Hai service with first port of call in Seattle

Wan Hai New Services Call NWSA

The Taiwan-based international shipping company Wan Hai Lines has announced The Northwest Seaport Alliance's Seattle Harbor as first port of call for its new, independent service. Wan Hai recently revamped its services to provide comprehensive coverage that meets its growing customer demand in the Pacific Northwest.

Beginning in mid-March, the AA5 service will call Kaohsiung, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Seattle, Oakland before returning to Kaohsiung. Calling Terminal 18 in Seattle, this service provides direct connections from Asia to the Pacific Northwest, which will reduce import transit times and increase loading options.

The NWSA is well-positioned to help minimize berth congestion and cargo delays along the west coast. Wan Hai is one of many ocean carriers selecting the NWSA gateway as a solution for reducing congestion issues.

Largest container vessel calls Husky Terminal at Port of Tacoma

MSC Auriga

Earlier this month, the Port of Tacoma welcomed the largest container ship ever to call its harbor. The MSC Auriga can hold up to 15,000 containers, and with the help of the Puget Sound Pilots and three Foss Maritime tugs, the vessel navigated through Commencement Bay to Husky Terminal. While at berth, skilled ILWU workers with super-post-Panamax cranes unloaded the vessel, allowing cargo to move onto its final destination throughout our region and the Midwest. The MSC Auriga was built in 2020 and stretches over 1,200 feet.
