Redmond, WA – Interim Fire Chief Don Horton will resign effective Friday, September 14. He is taking a permanent role as Fire Chief near Atlanta, Georgia, where he will be closer to family and loved ones. Chief Horton has served the City of Redmond for the past four and a half years as the Deputy Fire Chief and, most recently, as the interim Fire Chief. He has over 40 years of service in the Fire profession.

Chief Horton’s career as a firefighter began in 1980, in Richmond, Virginia, where he was promoted to lieutenant and later captain. He went on to serve as Fire Chief of Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 2007, and then Portsmouth, Virginia in 2009. Throughout his career, he focused on fire prevention and community outreach, implementing new programs including blood pressure screenings, an EMS bike team, and the Women in Fire Service Symposium.

Mayor Angela Birney is working with Chief Horton on a successful transition plan and will determine the best path forward to fill the Chief vacancy.
