REDMOND, WA – All synthetic turf play field areas at Perrigo Park will be
temporarily closed August 15 through October 2017 for turf replacement. Perrigo
Park is located at 9011 196th Ave. NE, Redmond, WA. During this installation period, the sports field area, north parking
lot and meadow areas will be closed. Construction staging will be in these areas, and we do not
expect traffic or pedestrian impacts around the park. The playground, pavilions
and bathrooms will remain open.
Perrigo Park was constructed in 2004 and included the
installation of 230,000 square feet of synthetic turf play fields. The
synthetic fields allow year-round use, making Perrigo one of the most visited
parks in the City of Redmond. After thirteen seasons of use, the synthetic turf
has reached the end of its useful life. The turf fibers are excessively worn
and require replacement in order to provide a safe playing surface. The
warranty for the original turf was eight years with an expected life cycle of
10-12 years.
Starting August 15, existing turf surfacing and infill
materials will be removed and recycled. The new turf covers the same area as
the original turf but is the most current generation of infilled synthetic turf
surfacing. A shock pad will be introduced underneath the new turf, specifically
designed to move surface water below the turf surface. With a minimum 25 year warranty, the pad consists of
interlocking polypropylene which can be removed and reinstalled on future turf
replacement projects.
A natural cork and sand infill material will then be placed
in between the synthetic grass blades, which helps the blades stand up. Portions
of this infill should be available for recycle and reuse during future field
replacements projects. The new turf will be available for a variety of
organized team sports including soccer and softball, with new marking for men
and women’s lacrosse.
City staff has been coordinating closely with sports leagues
and user groups in an effort to minimize disruption to their schedules. More
