Bulk business opportunity tops Thursday’s agenda

Commissioners are expected at their Thursday meeting to consider a lease with Targa Sound Terminal, LLC, to expand its petroleum facility to the former Kaiser site.

Targa Sound’s current location on Marine View Drive is the largest renewable fuel facility in the state. The company’s expansion to the former Kaiser site will add about 80 acres of rail logistics and tank storage, with ship and barge loading and unloading capacity served by the East Blair 1 wharf. Targa aims to have the facility operational as early as May 2014.

Commission meetings begin at noon in Room 104 of The Fabulich Center, 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. Meetings are available live and on demand from the Port's website.

Stage 2 burn ban issued for Pierce County

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued a stage 2 burn ban for King, Pierce and Snohomish counties to protect residents from worsening air quality. The ban is expected to be in effect for several days, as cold, dry, stagnant weather conditions are forecasted well into the week.

Under a stage 2 burn ban, no burning is allowed in wood or pellet stoves, fireplaces or fireplace inserts, and no outdoor fires are allowed. Residents are encouraged to use their home’s cleaner sources of heat, such as the furnace or baseboard heaters, until the air quality improves. Learn more.

The ports of Tacoma, Seattle and Metro Vancouver, B.C., are working together to reduce maritime-related air pollution through the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy. A 2011 report found that maritime-related air pollution has decreased – as much as 40 percent, depending on the type – since 2005.
