Tacoma’s intermodal volumes continue strong
Continued increases in international and domestic intermodal container traffic helped drive the Port of Tacoma’s intermodal volumes up 16 percent through February. This is the fourth month in a row that intermodal volumes have increased. For the same time period, total container volumes dropped by 4 percent.

Other year-over-year Tacoma cargo results:

  • Breakbulk volumes rose 51 percent, piqued by strong demand for construction and agriculture equipment.
  • Imported auto units are up 7 percent, illustrating improving U.S. auto sales.
  • Log exports slipped 28 percent, due to a slowing Chinese real estate market and the general economy.

Washington United Terminals wins Grand Alliance business
The Grand Alliance, a group of three major shipping lines, has chosen the Port of Tacoma’s Washington United Terminals (WUT) as its northwest port-of-call. The three lines, NYK Line, OOCL and Hapag-Lloyd, are expected to begin calling at WUT in July.

The new business likely will lead to a significant increase in the number of jobs for port workers, and could restore the Port’s business close to 2006 peak levels before the recession slowed imports.
