January 2023 | PSEMP Newsletter
Happy new year! There are several funding opportunities currently open or will be open in the near future. Please take a look at those opportunities in our funding round up!
For the full PSEMP calendar, please follow this link. Please note that the links above will link to meeting materials. If the materials are not posted yet, they will be available soon. Some Work Groups require folks to join listservs to get access to meeting information.
During this time of the year, many of our partners and agencies have funding opportunities available for folks to apply. This list is not comprehensive but provides an opportunity to share funding opportunities that may be of interest to this community. If you have additional funding opportunities that are not listed here, please send them to katrina.radach@psp.wa.gov to be included in future newsletters.

Salmon Science Investigations - RFI Open
Investigations could include but are not limited to modeling, research, and syntheses to address emerging issues of concern, factors limiting recovery, and other critical science and monitoring questions to advance Puget Sound salmon recovery. Outcomes of the proposed investigations should support ongoing recovery planning and adaptive management efforts to ensure self-sustaining, harvestable, salmon runs that sustain people and orcas in Puget Sound. Proposed investigations are encouraged to address environmental justice, tribal needs, and treaty rights in relation to salmon recovery.

Stormwater Action Monitoring (SAM)
|
Both SAM staff and the Stormwater WG are preparing to open a RFP in January 2023 for new SAM Effectiveness and Source ID studies. These studies will be funded with revenue collected under the municipal stormwater permits from 2022-2024. We anticipate holding a project selection workshop in late 2023 similar to what has been done in the past. The WG will approve the study topic list at their November 2022 meeting; for more details on SWG activities see the Stormwater Work Group (SWG) website. More information at this link.

Climate Resilient Riparian Systems Lead - RFA Open
The overall goal of the Puget Sound Climate Resilient Riparian Systems Lead request for applications is to establish an innovative and collaborative riparian conservation program that provides financial incentives for landowners to permanently protect and restore riparian areas important for providing ecosystem services, including those supporting salmon recovery, while successfully implementing approaches to promote climate resiliency.
EPA anticipates awarding up to $30 million over four years of incremental funding under this announcement, to be leveraged using non-federal matching funds with the hope of building a robust and sustainable program.
The successful applicant will manage a sub-award program for supporting riparian conservation efforts.

ReGreen the Green - Grants Open
This fund supports projects that enhance riparian shade to improve conditions for salmon and meet water quality standards that support aquatic life. There is a need to restore trees and native vegetation on all land use types, urban and rural, along the entire length of the Green River and its tributaries. Riparian revegetation projects improve water quality, salmon habitat, and contribute to the urban tree canopy. WRIA 9’s 2016 Re-Green the Green: Riparian Revegetation Strategy for the Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed provides important background, scientific basis, and priorities for revegetation projects, including the banks of the rivers and streams mapped as high shade priority based on their solar sun angle or aspect.

|
2023 - RFP Open
The Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership (PMEP) requests proposals for projects that will advance fish habitat conservation and restoration along the West Coast. PMEP is seeking project proposals that restore, enhance, or protect habitats for PMEP focal species within nearshore marine and estuarine systems (with an emphasis on habitat connectivity) or proposals that increase our understanding of fish habitats in estuarine and nearshore marine waters.

2023 Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program - Open
The mission of the National Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program (BREP) is to support the development of technological solutions and changes in fishing practices designed to minimize bycatch of fish and protected species (including Endangered Species Act-listed fish, marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles) and to reduce impacts to invertebrates (including sponges, deep-sea corals, and shallow (tropical) corals.) In addition, BREP may support projects that quantify post-release mortality and identify ways to minimize mortality and injury of bycaught species (including post-release injury and mortality). Projects should produce outcomes that can directly influence management needs of federally managed living marine resources.
