Statement from Stephanie Solien and Les Purce, Co-Chairs of the Governor's Southern Resident Orca Task Force

"The recent news that the newborn calf of Southern Resident orca J35 died shortly after birth has been heart breaking for us, as it has been for all those who are concerned about the future of these beloved and critically endangered animals. Watching J35 grieve over her dead calf has brought many of us to tears. It has also served to heighten the urgency and resolve for the mission of the Task Force.

Since the initial meeting of the Task Force on May 1 of this year, we have been working at full speed to determine the actions that would most effectively and most immediately improve conditions for the southern residents. We fully understand the urgent need for action.

Task Force recommendations for actions will be delivered to Governor Inslee by October 1. These recommendations are being shaped this summer through three working groups of stakeholders, scientists, experts, and interested parties. The working groups are this month completing their list of proposed actions that, if taken, stand the greatest potential for helping the orca population begin to grow again. The recommended actions will focus on three main issues:

  • Make more Chinook salmon for the orca to eat
  • Prevent toxins in water and fish from further contaminating orca
  • Lessen the interference of vessels and other water craft with orcas that are feeding, socializing and resting

The Task Force process is robust, and it takes into account the many different perspectives on highly complex issues. This process is the best hope we have for bringing disparate viewpoints and voices together to find the common ground we need to take decisive action. The Task Force is committed to reaching agreement and taking action."
