We’re excited to welcome Cassandra Hayes to the SFSP Team! Cassandra brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience in child nutrition, local food systems, and community-centered programs.
About Cassandra:
“I started with school nutrition when I did a project for school and fell in love with the program. I became a director with my focus on implementing and growing Farm to School programs to support from scratch school menus while improving Nutrition Services budgets. I have a passion for supporting the community and local agriculture and have done so with my previous programs, including my most recent programs at Colville.
I'm excited to join SFSP to support sponsors with their own programs and communities as well as grow our state Farm to CNP program with OSPI.
My husband, our two daughters, and I have a little family farm where we raise cattle, pigs, poultry, rabbits, horses, four giant dogs and two cats. In my off time, I'm with my girls riding horses, taking care of animals, milking a cow, butchering, gardening, or teaching others similar skills. I really enjoy our little slice of paradise and sharing our knowledge and skills with others.”

The USDA released policy memo SP 11-2025, CACFP 09-2025, SFSP 05-2025: Using Federal Funds to Purchase Local Foods reminding schools, sponsors, and institutions participating in an USDA Child Nutrition Program (CNP), including the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), Special Milk Program for Children (SMP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO), of the many ways they can purchase local foods to serve in Program meals.
Sourcing and serving locally grown foods, and other farm to school activities, such as taste testing, gardening, and agriculture education, can infuse new energy and vision into CNP operations, support community health, create new opportunities for American farmers, invest Federal dollars in local economies, and strengthen strategies to encourage healthy choices.
