The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) is offering grants of up to $600,000 to implement innovative “grow your own” teacher strategies that address workforce shortages, and recruit, support, and prepare diverse teacher candidates. The Alternative Route Block Grant (ARBG) provides funds for candidate conditional loan scholarships and program, district, and mentor support.
PESB-approved alternative route programs are eligible to apply. Eligible program partners include school districts, tribal compact schools, charter schools, district consortia, and ESDs. Other partners may include community organizations, community colleges, and other teacher preparation programs. Awardees will receive funding for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

What is an alternative route?
Alternative Routes to Teacher Certification are designed for career changers and individuals already working in the school system who want to earn a residency teacher certificate. Compared to traditional educator preparation programs, alternative routes tend to be shorter, more convenient, more affordable, and more practically oriented. Find out more on our website.
When is the application due?
The grant application is due October 9 (an extension from the previous deadline).
