About OSPI Masterclass: These lunch-and-learns are created with the purpose of learning and sharing information not strictly related to work. These monthly one-hour sessions will be facilitated by a staff member and will provide the opportunity to meet other staff members, build relationships and trust, and learn something new!

The OSPI Videography Style Guide is intended to be a direction manual for Communication & Digital Media and other OSPI staff, as well as professional photographers and videographers doing work on OSPI’s behalf. It includes tools to direct your visual content production processes and ensure we connect with audiences through the same creative lens.
Please review the guide to ensure you are fully aware of OSPI’s preferred video production methods, specifications, and outcomes. By applying these practices, we can align our creative approach and produce videos that are compelling and on-brand.
If you have any questions not answered in the guide, please contact the Communication & Digital Media Department.

April is Celebrate Diversity Month! Diversity's literal definition is, "the state of being diverse, variety, and a range of different things." In addition to ones' skin color, gender or sexuality, ability and veteran status, diversity is also the places we have lived, the families we love, and the traditions we hold dear. This month we are challenging OSPI to find its diversity! Please visit this Diversity Board as we will continue to share resources and activities that promote diversity through the month of April!
April is also National Autism Awareness Month. We encourage you to celebrate, support, and bring awareness around Autism. You can learn more about Autism by visiting Autism Society. Also, learn about some famous people who are on the Autism Spectrum: Famous People on the Autism Spectrum.
See the intranet page here for more resources and links! STRIDE will add more resources to share during the month!

THIS WEEK: Go Ask Alice About Luggage
The word portmanteau comes from the French—porte meaning "carry" and manteau meaning "cloak" or “coat.” Originally, this referred to a large suitcase that came open at the middle into two even halves.
Then Alice came along.
The English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, under the pen name Lewis Carroll, released Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. This is a story of a young girl who follows a rabbit down a hole into a strange and magical world. Carroll’s characters use many words that were either entirely made-up or applied in unexpected ways.
This same off-kilter style continues in the 1871 sequel, Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. This novel contains many words created by combining two words together, like "mimsy" (miserable and flimsy). As the character Humpty Dumpty puts it in the book: "You see it's like a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed up into one word." The luggage is used as a simile for the art of slamming together two halves to create something whole.
Carroll's use of a suitcase as an analogy changed the meaning of the word portmanteau forever. Today, in most contexts, a portmanteau refers to a word made out of multiple pre-existing words. Popular portmanteaus include "smog" (smoke and fog), "spork" (spoon and fork), and "liger" (lion and tiger). Many mixed dog breeds are titled by way of portmanteau, “Labradoodle” (Labrador and Poodle) being a notable example. The use of portmanteau to refer to luggage is all but extinct.
The moral of our story today is, be careful when falling down any rabbit holes. You just might alter an obscure piece of language in the process.
