We want to remind all SFSP sponsors that a complete 2022 application includes your WINS application plus the 2022 SFSP Application Submission Survey. We do not begin reviewing applications until both have been submitted.
Steps to Complete
1. Review the appropriate SFSP Application Bulletin for requirements.
-
New SFSP Sponsors: Sponsors who did not operate SFSP in Summer 2021; sponsors electing to operate the SFSP and have not operated a Child Nutrition Program previously; returning sponsors with new lead administrative staff; and returning sponsors required to attend as part of their corrective action plan must attend a New Sponsor training. Please continue reading the Training Requirements section of this article for more information.
-
Returning SFSP Sponsors: Sponsors who operated the SFSP during summer 2021 and do not have new lead administrators, and are not required to attend in-person training as part of a corrective action plan must complete SFSP Returning Sponsor training requirements.
2. Use the SFSP Application Checklist to help complete application requirements.
3. Gather the appropriate additional documentation to submit your application.
4. Submit required documentation using the 2022 SFSP Application Submission Survey. NOTE: Make sure you have all your documents ready to upload before completing the checklist. If you exit the checklist before it is submitted, your progress will be lost.
Please refer to the Application Materials dropdown on our SFSP Requirements and Materials webpage for information on completing your application this year.

Determining Area Eligibility
As you start completing your SFSP applications, we want to share a reminder of two primary sources of data that may be used to determine whether an Open or Closed Enrolled Site is area eligible.
School Data Area eligibility may be assigned if school data indicates that the proposed meal site is located in an attendance area of a public school where at least 50% of the children are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Please use OSPI’s 2021–22 Washington Public School Data for Area Eligibility Report to obtain the school data of the qualifying school.
Census Data Census data must indicate the proposed meal site is located in a Census Block Group or Census Tract in which at least 50 percent or more of children are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Use the No Kid Hungry Averaged Eligibility Map to determine whether a site is eligible. If a meal site is located in an orange or blue Census Block Group on this map, it is area eligible. A site located in a grey Census Block Group is not area eligible.
You only need to use one of these sources of data to determine area eligibility of your proposed site(s). If a site is not eligible using one source, try the other!
Once area eligibility is determined for Open sites, it is valid for five (5) consecutive participation years.
The Area Eligibility in Child Nutrition Programs Reference Sheet provides more details on area eligibility.

Check out our SFSP Site Resources!
It is important to communicate with families as we transition back to normal SFSP operational requirements. We understand this may be challenging, as families have been able to grab meals and leave the past two summers. Two major changes from operations during the pandemic include:
- Requiring of all meals to be consumed on site.
- Parents or guardians no longer able to pick up meals for their children.
Resources
OSPI has the following resources to assist with this transition, which can be found on our SFSP Requirements and Materials page! We encourage sponsors to print up these resources and provide them to sites.
No Kid Hungry also created several resources to assist in communicating operations changes.
Questions? Please email the Summer Meals inbox.
