Seeing China Through Film: Kaili Blues
Watch the film at home, then join us online for a free virtual talkback with film expert Richard Peña.
An audacious, richly imagined feature debut that has collected prizes around the world, Kaili Blues ( 路边野餐) heralds the arrival of a major new filmmaker. In a small clinic in the rain-drenched city of Kaili, two preoccupied doctors live ghost-like lives. One of them, Chen, decides to fulfill a family wish and sets off on a train journey to search for his brother’s abandoned child, only to find himself in a dreamlike world where past, present, and future–as well as fantasy and reality–become one. This remarkable visual achievement was shot in the mining village Kaili, the director’s birthplace, and incorporates poetry he has been writing since he was a teenager. The film is partly a meditation on what it means to grapple with ancient traditions in hyper-modern society, by one of China’s most important directors.

70th Annual Conference: The Leader Within
As educators, we are always called upon to be leaders, each in our own way and according to our own skills and strengths. The extreme circumstances of this past year and a half of COVID have challenged us in ways that we never could have imagined. At times, we all felt overwhelmed by it, but most of us rose to new heights and re-invented both ourselves and our schools. None of us knows for sure what our world will look like when this is all over. We do know that it will be different and we will have to reach deep within ourselves to be proactive in charting a new course.

Motivating Action through Applied Improv Ian Willey; Kagawa University
Exercises from improvisational theater have gained attention in educational fields for their capacity to promote empathy and communication skills among learners. The presenter will first describe a study that sought to identify whether weekly use of these “applied improv” exercises in English classes boosted Japanese university students’ compassion scores, with compassion defined as empathy combined with a willingness to act. Positive gains in compassion scores were identified. Attendees will then be able to experience several of these fun and simple exercises and games, which can be done in three- to five-minute sessions in both face-to-face and online classes. Attendees will leave the presentation equipped with a repertoire of quick activities to energize students and enable them to speak and act promptly in future communicative encounters.
Process Drama in the Language Classroom Chhayankdhar Singh Rathore, Konan Women’s University, Kobe
In this online workshop, the presenter will introduce how process drama can be used in the language classroom. Through a chain of interconnected activities, the participants will explore the structure of process drama and discuss its application in the language classroom. The participants will be offered a hands-on experience of a variety of activities from the process drama repertoire. These activities have been selected to respond to the concerns of language teachers with regard to educational drama such as difficulty in incorporating course materials in drama activities, difficulty in incorporating reading and listening skills in drama activities, and inability to take drama beyond icebreakers and warm-up activities. While the structure of the workshop will be provided by the facilitator, the contents will be largely determined by the participants. So, participants are requested to come prepared for active engagement with their cameras on and have a pen and paper at the ready.
Are you interested in offering telecollaborative learning for your students? Join this event to learn about what students get out of the learning experience and discuss with other educators on how we can maximize the learning outcomes throughout authentic intercultural communication online. The presenter will share her research findings as well as practical tips to support learners in teletandem learning, drawing on her own experience as a facilitator in the teletandem program at her institution.

Korean Instant Pot Cooking
Recipe developers Nancy Cho and Selina Lee learned to make Korean food from their mothers and grandmothers. For Nancy, this transpired in her family's kitchen in California suburbs, while Selina's experience came from growing up in Seoul, Korea. Together, they set out to explore their Korean heritage, family experiences, and cherished dishes from their childhood to the present. In the Korean Instant Pot Cookbook, they share over 90 recipes, tested and translated for preparation in the Instant Pot - all while maintaining the flavors and foundational traditions of Korean cuisine. WORKSHOP | Integrating Principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies
Drawing on the work of colleagues, peer institutions, and professional organizations, as well as examples from her own teaching, research, and experience, Prof. Naomi Caffee will give an overview of current conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion in our field. Particular attention will be paid to institutional practices (antiracist/inclusive/disability-informed teaching; recruiting and mentoring students and faculty from diverse backgrounds; decolonizing research methods, etc.) and the content of research and instruction (courses/departments/degree programs expanding their scope to include cultural diversity in the Russian-speaking world, the Russophone/Russian distinction, race in Russia and the post-Soviet space, etc.). Prof. Caffee will also provide participants with information about initiatives and resources dedicated to furthering these goals. This event will consist of a presentation, followed by a Q&A/brainstorming session and a follow-up list of materials to be shared with participants.

MLK Event — The Wayland Rudd Collection: Exploring Racial Imaginaries in Soviet Visual Culture
Scholar, artist, and writer Yevgeniy Fiks presents an archive of Soviet media images of Africans and African Americans — from propaganda posters to postage stamps — mainly related to African liberation movements and civil rights struggles. The project is named after Wayland Rudd (1900-1952), a Black American actor who moved to the Soviet Union in 1932. Fiks brings together post-colonial and post-Soviet perspectives, mapping the complicated and often contradictory intersection of race and Communism in the Soviet context, exposing the interweaving of internationalism, solidarity, humanism, and Communist ideals with practices of othering and exoticization. The Wayland Rudd Collection focuses on the Soviet Union’s critique of systemic racism in the US.
