We are excited to announce that Chaundi will be stepping into the Community Nutrition Programs Supervisor role this month!

The CACFP renewal deadline was set for 9/1 to allow program specialists enough time to review renewal applications prior to the beginning of fiscal year 21–22 on October 1.
It may take up to 30 days for your renewal application to be approved. Renewals submitted after September 1, 2021, risk not being approved in time for their centers to claim meal reimbursement starting on October 1, 2021.
If you have not submitted your renewal yet use this checklist to complete your renewal.

- Ounce Equivalents (Oz. Eq.) 101 Training

Review the Specialist’s Insider Tips for Renewal article for additional assistance.
Monthly claims are due by the 15th of each month following the claim period. All claims entered in WINS and in OK to Pay status will process for payment at the end of the month. Here are some important reminders about claiming in the Washington Integrated Nutrition System (WINS):
General Claiming Reminders
- Monthly claim data must be in "OK to Pay" status by 5:00 pm PT on the 15th.
- WINS will automatically log all users out of the system on the 15th of each month at 5pm PT.
- Ensure to give yourself enough time to input all claiming data so the claim is in “OK to Pay” status.
- Once WINS closes down the claiming option users are not allowed to input claim data until after the monthly claim reconciliation process is complete. This can take up to two business days.
- Didn't submit your claim by the 15th? That's okay! File your monthly claim by the 60-day deadline.
- Example: The August 60-day claim deadline is November 1, 2021.
- Claim reimbursements that are not entered into WINS or not in OK to pay status will NOT process for payment by the end of the month.
- The 20-21 Claim Processing Dates Information Sheet takes weekends and holidays into consideration for the 60-day deadlines. You may want to print or bookmark this information.
- Refer to the Claims Reference Sheet for details on what to do if you don't submit your claims by the 60-day claim deadline.
- Errors must be resolved for claims to be paid. WINS has multiple edit checks to help resolve issues before your claim is submitted.
- Review the Claiming Error Messages in WINS Information Sheet for more details on possible errors.
-
Common Errors
- Total Attendance is entered with the claim and is the sum of children in attendance each day during the month. Meals claimed in excess of Total Attendance will result in a claim error.
- WINS edit checks the number of approved operating days for each site to the number of operating days entered in the site claim. If these numbers don’t match, the claim will go into error status.
- Pro-Tip: Always select “Preview Errors” at the bottom of each site claim once information is entered.

Ounce Equivalent requirements begin 10/1! Have you shared details with your staff?
Does your staff know how many crackers they need to serve in order to have the grains portion meet the minimum amount based upon the age of the child? Ounce Equivalents 101 was part of Annual Training requirements this year and can help you decide if any adjustments are needed for your menus and production amounts.
If you haven't shared the training with your staff, now is a great time to do so!
Staff responsible for menu planning for your sites or your organization should watch the Ounce Equivalents 101 recorded training.
Some of you might want to consider making up a quick reference sheet that lists out all of the grains you serve, and what portions are required for each age group. Others may just need to provide staff access to the Team Nutrition resource–Using Ounce Equivalents for Grains in the Child and Adult Care Food Program.
About Ounce Equivalents
Ounce equivalents allow you to credit for the amount of grains that is in any given grain product. Many grain products have additional ingredients like oil, milk, and eggs that can increase the weight of the final products. Because of this, the amount of grains in a product can vary from item to item.
Consider a standard dinner roll and compare it to a waffle—while a bread roll might be smaller than the waffle, the amount of creditable grain flour in the product might be the same because it is mostly grains, while waffles include other ingredients.
In addition, grain products may vary in sizes. Waffles and other grain items come in many different sizes with some crediting for far larger portions than the minimum.

OSPI Child Nutrition Services invites you to participate in Farm to CACFP Week!
You can engage children and families by including fresh, local foods in your CACFP menu and offering food-related enrichment activities to your program participants during the week of October 4–8, 2021.
Including fresh, local foods in the menus increases meal quality and supports local farmers. Nutrition and agriculture enrichment activities have been shown to increase kids’ consumption of fruit and vegetables as well as their willingness to try new foods.
Take the Pledge
Take the pledge to participate in Farm to CACFP Week! You can plan to serve at least one local food item, offer at least one food-related educational activity, and share your efforts over social media or another communication method.
