The Sunday Scaries
Ah, August—the “Sunday evening” of the summer break. I have seen many of my educator friends posting about how they cannot believe they are soon heading back into their classrooms (in the Northeast and Midwest) or how they already ARE in their classrooms (in the South). It is understandable to be feeling a huge mixture of emotions. I know the feelings well—anticipation, excitement, anxiety, and again this August, maybe some fear or dread mixed in. You all powered through what I can confidently call the most stressful school year of this century. From remote or virtual learning to hybrid classes to fully in-person, you taught through them all and for that, you deserved the most relaxing summer of your life.
I wish I had an answer to all of the questions still floating around about safety and equity. I, as you, rely on updates from the Department of Health, Superintendent Reykdal, and Governor Inslee. So much is yet out of our control, so I have been choosing to focus on what I can manage: how World Languages at OSPI responds to the needs of the WL community throughout Washington. I will be working diligently to disseminate the most up-to-date resources that are pertinent to as many educators and students as possible. I want to share the successes from your programs and districts. I want to distribute what you all have learned to help create a greater collective knowledge of how to implement and run the Seal of Biliteracy, standards-based grading, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. I want to see National Board certification for ALL languages. All of these are manageable with your help. Just like you, I cannot do this job alone.
The “Sunday Scaries” can become the “Sunday Supports” or “Sunday Soothings” when we share and sustain each other. Which is why I will ask in every newsletter for you—yes, YOU reading this right now!—to send me updates, thoughts, research, webinars, or questions I can bring forward that can help our community. We have almost all felt the overpowering isolation since March 2020 so let’s stop being islands. As an old Scandinavian proverb declares, “Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow"…though don’t quote me on its authenticity—let’s try it out for ourselves. 😉

Washington State K–12 World Languages Learning Standards Revision Workgroup Creation
To ensure the quality of Washington’s World Language standards, OSPI reviews and revises them every seven to eight years. As the current WL standards were adopted in 2015, the time has come to create a workgroup to revisit the criteria and create benchmarks and indicators. We will be sending out applications for those interested in helping with this important work starting in September. Our goal is to keep equity, diversity, and inclusion at the forefront of our development process, as well as creating connections and honoring all the magnificent cultures within Washington.

U.S. students, researchers, scholars, and educators benefit when they engage with peers from around the world, whether overseas or through international education at home. All Americans need to be equipped with global and cultural competencies to navigate the ever-changing landscapes of education, international business, scientific discovery and innovation, and the global economy. International education enhances cultural and linguistic diversity, and helps to develop cross-cultural communication skills, foreign language competencies, and enhanced self-awareness and understanding of diverse perspectives

August 10 from 4:00–4:30 PM ET
In learning a first or second language, learning disabilities (LD) often affect language-based tasks such as reading, spelling, writing, or listening. While digital learning resources can be transformative to meet the unique needs of students with an LD, overcoming barriers to digital access for these learners, particularly those with IEPs or 504 plans, should be carefully considered and addressed.

The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes learners' proficiency in English and another language. Inspired by examples of school, district, and state responses to the challenges in nurturing biliteracy, design your implementation plan to bring this opportunity to all learners. Issues addressed include challenges of equity and access for language development, evaluation of language proficiency, and creating pathways from primary to secondary to postsecondary levels.
