Applications must be submitted by September 30, 2021.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted nationwide waivers allowing all students to continue to receive meals during school year 2021–22 using the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). These waivers allow flexibilities to support the reopening of schools and serve all students free of charge, regardless of income and are available to all schools. The waivers allow:
- Operation of SSO at all schools regardless of location or site type.
- Schools operating SSO to provide meals free of charge to all students.
- SSO meals served to be reimbursed at a higher reimbursement rate.

With these waivers, districts may choose to provide meals during SY 21–22 using the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) or the Seamless Summer Option (SSO).

The Special Milk Program (SMP) provides milk to children in schools, childcare institutions, and eligible camps that do not participate in other federal child nutrition programs. The program reimburses schools and institutions for the milk they serve.

All local education agencies (LEAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or School Breakfast Program (SBP) must make free and reduced-price meals available to students.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued waivers to support the safe re-opening of schools while ensuring program access. With these waivers, districts may choose to provide meals this fall through the NSLP Seamless Summer Option (SSO). While the SSO program does not require families to complete meal applications, we strongly encourage districts to continue to collect and process applications in support of other programs.
