New resources for professional growth plans
|
|
Professional growth plans (PGPs) are job-embedded, self-directed professional learning that allows an educator to set and align goals to certificate standards, design an action plan, and collect evidence documenting their growth.
New resources
Based on educator feedback, PESB has made updates to PGP templates and several new resources have been created and posted to the PESB website. This includes example PGPs for meeting the STEM certificate renewal requirement, and example PGPs for paraeducators.
Resources available:
Educators are still able to complete PGPs with older versions of the PGP template 1697.

Professional growth plans across the career continuum
The primary role of an educator is to foster growth for each of their students. To do this effectively, educators must receive opportunities across the trajectory of their career to grow and develop themselves, and their skills.
Washington has two types of PGPs that allow for coherent educator learning across the continuum.

“PGPs have been a way for me to collaborate with my colleagues across roles and serve as a mentor to newer educators. This collaboration has reconnected me to my building and improved my instruction - which hopefully has improved student learning and increased my overall job satisfaction.”
- Amy Frost, Educator and PESB board member

Certificate renewal
In-service educators can complete PGPs for certificate renewal aligned to the career level benchmarks. PGPs for certificate renewal are eligible for 25 clock hours. PGPs are one option for educators to renew their certificate. Learn more about PGPs for certificate renewal.
Program completion
Pre-service candidates complete PGPs using residency level benchmarks for program completion. However, unlike PGPs for certificate renewal, they do not collect evidence during the process. Candidates using PGPs for program completion will be equipped to comfortably accessPGPs for certificate renewal once in the field. Learn more about PGPs for program completion.
PGPs for paraeducators
In 2019 the Professional Educator Standards Board and Paraeducator board approved a policy allowing paraeducators to earn clock hours through the PGP process. Paraeducators may complete PGPs to help attain or renew certain certificates as part of the paraeducator certificate program. Learn more about the certificate program.
- General paraeducator certificate: only one PGP may be completed to help meet certificate requirements.
- Subject matter certificates: a PGP cannot be completed to attain a subject matter certificate, but it may be completed to renew a subject matter certificate.
- Advanced paraeducator certificate: PGPs may be completed to both attain and renew the certificate.
