Measurement Progression Document
In last month's Learning and Teaching Content Integration Newsletter we previewed an OSPI-developed Number Sense strand progression document for use by teachers in all subject areas. We are continuing the series by sharing a progression document for the Measurement strand.
Math Teachers: Use this document to further your understanding of the coherence of the measurement strand across the grade levels.
Other Content Areas: Use this document as a resource when planning your lessons. Increase your understanding of what math skills you can expect students to be able to access and what you can reinforce as part of your lesson to strengthen cross-content integration.

High School Math Contest
Schools across Washington state qualified at high school regional math competitions, and received an invitation to the State Math Contest at Central Washington University. Project presentations included solving contextually rich problems such as plastic waste in communities or gerrymandering. A six hour “math bee” called Knowdown was held, where high schools students worked in teams or individually while their coaches discussed math in the context of current issues. Many students left with ribbons, plaques, new calculators and software to celebrate their achievements. Nearly twenty students received $1,000 tuition waivers to CWU.
Join us next year for the qualifying regional competitions at ten locations around the state on March 11, 2020 and at CWU for the State Math Contest on April 18, 2020. Don’t miss out! Visit WSMC’s website wsmc.net or email Jim.Miller@cwu.edu for more information.

Shining a Light
We’re always looking to shine a light on the best of mathematics education in Washington. What’s happening in your school or district that is making mathematics enjoyable and attainable? In this issue, we’re particularly interested in knowing:
- How are you increasing vertical alignment of the standards?
- What are you doing to develop discourse in the mathematics classroom and beyond?
- How are you utilizing the Standards for Mathematical Practice in mathematics instruction (or even other subject areas!)?
Want to share? Send an email to Shine a Light!
