CTE Dual Credit & SERS Revision Roll-Out

The Statewide Enrollment Reporting System (SERS) is undergoing some revisions. Due to new statewide policies, SERS isrequired to revise all online applications to have better security protocols and improved accessibility for users with disabilities.

Security protocol changes

  • New sign-in procedures for all users- security questions, as well as new user name and password requirements. These are much like other applications you use every day.
  • The new student account page has eliminated sensitive information, like social security numbers.
  • Users will be able to recover their user name and reset their passwords.

Accessibility enhancements

  • New design to aid users who need to use electronic readers.
  • Better placement of navigation buttons.

The basic functionality of SERS remains the same. Processes for student registration, tracking students, assigning grades and credits, and viewing articulation agreements will not change much. All SERS records, from the inception of SERS, will be retrained in the new application.

If you would like to volunteer to test revised modules within the SERS application, please contact David Coffman via email. Testing should take no more than a few hours of your time.

As SERS is being revised, Tech Prep will be re-branded. Tech Prep is being re-branded because:

1. Tech Prep originally referred to a federal funding source. That federal funding was eliminated several years ago.

2. The phrase “Tech Prep” doesn’t convey much meaning for others who are not involved in the program. It doesn’t translate well for students or parents. The colleges, high schools, and skill centers, want to be more clear that this program meets high school graduation requirements and allows students to earn college credit.

3. The new branding establishes CTE dual credit classes to be on par with Running Start and College in the High School dual credit classes.

Who was involved in these discussion?

Representatives from:·

  • CTE directors representing different areas of the state and different size school districts.
  • Tech Prep coordinators at various community and technical colleges across the state.
  • Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction staff.
  • State Board for Community and Technical College staff.

Introducing  the new “CTE Dual Credit Classes” (formerly Tech Prep) Logo

SERS Logo

Over the next several months, you will begin to see “CTE Dual Credit Classes” on web pages, and documents, that previously read “Tech Prep”. There will also be a new URL for the SERS application: sers-cte.org.  You will be able to use the old SERS address for the next several months. Upon visiting the old URL, you will automatically be navigated to the new site.

During the transition to "CTE Dual Credit Classes", please use either term as appropriate with your various stakeholders and audiences. The hope is the re-branding of this program makes sense to you and the students you serve.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Goebel

Culminating Culinary Event with Tom Douglas

This July, students attended the Tom Douglas Culinary Access Event. Seattle Public Schools Career and Technical Education students who participated in the Seattle Skills Center Summer Culinary courses had the opportunity to experience industry first hand. Tom Douglas and his team created an inspiring event for students following a month of intensive learning experiences, guest speakers and field trips.

Seattle students have already benefited from this summer opportunity. Four culinary classes were offered this summer through the Seattle Skills Center. Ingraham High School, Roosevelt High School, West Seattle High School and Rainier Beach High School each hosted a course taught by either a local chef or a Family and Consumer Science Instructor from Seattle Public Schools. For many students this was an opportunity to explore a career path as a future career option, for others this confirmed their commitment to a culinary career. All students learned valuable skills around cooking and nutrition that they will take with them and use in their daily living.  Students valued the hands on approach to learning.  In addition to the daily cooking labs, the students participated on field trips to Ivar’s, South Seattle College, Bow Hill Blueberry Farm, Mod Pizza Headquarters, West Seattle Bee Garden and Pike Place Market to name a few.  Guest chefs and speakers from local industry all shared their knowledge and expertise to help students understand the many facets of the culinary industry.

Health Sciences Education

Krista Loney, Director of the Eastern Washington Area Health Education Center (EWAHEC) at Eastern Washington University is requesting your assistance. The EWAHEC is considering the purchase and outfit of a mobile laboratory.  This laboratory would travel to schools in all 20 counties of Eastern Washington to teach non-traditional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education that will support and supplement what students are learning in school.  Before we do this, we would like to hear from the citizens that we would serve. We want to know if they see value in something like this, beyond it being “cool”. We have created a survey to gather feedback, please take it here

Nathalia Holt, a science writer and the New York Times best-selling author of Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us from Missiles to the Moon to Mars, will visit the 2017 Puyallup Festival of Books. Her book chronicles the work done, by women mathematicians, for NASA at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California (so, the West coast version of the Hidden Figures story). Holt’s work has been published in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Slate, Popular Science, and Time.

Ms. Holt’s appearance will be paired with a talk by Soyeon Yi, the only astronaut ever sent to outer space by South Korea, having been chosen from more than 36,000 of her fellow countrymen. She made history on April 8, 2008 when she boarded a spacecraft and spent twelve days at the International Space Station conducting numerous experiments. Yi moved to the United States in 2014 and now lives in Puyallup.

Holt and Yi’s presentations will be followed by a joint question-and-answer session moderated by Will James of NPR station KNKX.
