On April 10th, 2025, Senators Javier Valdez, Rebecca Saldaña and Bill Ramos, along with Mi Centro, ArtsWA, and the Commission on Hispanic Affairs hosted a celebration honoring Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney. The event began with the reading of a Senate resolution honoring Phyllis for her trailblazing work and dedication to the Latino community.
Phyllis’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing the rights of Latino families, promoting education, fighting for workers’ rights, and championing social justice for all. Let's dive into some of the many highlights in her term.
With an active political climate and new federal and state administrations, it's the perfect time to revisit how government works at every level. CHA’s Government 101 Campaign offers a clear refresher on the structure and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments—and how their actions impact our everyday lives.
To bring these concepts to life, we’ve created a playful case study, “The Giant Inflatable Duck Crisis,” that models how different levels of government might respond in a real-world scenario.
Dive into the campaign, explore the materials, and share the fictional—but fun—crisis with your networks!
I’m Sebastian Genge, an Environmental Planner at CHA. I’m leading a grant-funded project from the Department of Ecology to raise awareness about safer cleaning options in overburdened Latino communities in Central Washington. While I present at each session, this work wouldn’t be possible without my colleagues Cynthia Tamayo and Nancy Rocha Aguilar...
We’ve partnered with Nuestra Casa, a trusted community-based nonprofit in Sunnyside, to host a series of Spanish-language outreach events known as charlas
We have four more charlas scheduled for May—on May 6, 14, 15, and 28—and I look forward to continuing this important work.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of Senator Bill Ramos. Throughout his time in the legislature, first as a member of the House of Representatives, he was an unwavering partner and friend to the Commission on Hispanic Affairs’ staff and commissioners.
He was proud of his Mexican heritage and firmly believed in the power and brilliance of Washington’s Latine community. Senator Ramos was known for showing up for his colleagues, friends, district, and broader community. We will miss him dearly and carry forward his legacy of showing up and working for good change. We hold his wife, Sarah, and his children in our hearts during this difficult time.
Que descanse en paz y poder, amigo. -MAS
