Welcome to SHIBA Medicare News

This is the first issue of our SHIBA Medicare News using “govDelivery” (similar to a listserv) to communicate directly with SHIBA volunteers, volunteer coordinators and staff.

How did I get added to this list?

  • The email in your STARS Resource Record was added to this list by SHIBA administrative staff.
  • We want to have a way to send information directly to our network of people officially connected to the SHIBA program and doing SHIBA work.

What types of information will we share via SHIBA Medicare News?

  • Training opportunities for SHIBA volunteers and staff.
  • Information about changes and updates to SHIBA volunteer-only job aids or other internal training documents.
  • Information about changes and updates to STARS and My SHIBA.

How is this list different from SHIBA News Flash?

  • SHIBA News Flash is for a broader audience including our community partners or any other interested people.
  • If you want to subscribe to News Flash, the link lives on My SHIBA under the News and events page.
  • The information we share on News Flash is for anyone who’s interested in learning more about Medicare to help people navigate it. We don’t share internal, SHIBA-only information in News Flash.

What else do I need to know?

  • If you aren’t already signed up for News Flash, we recommend you do so. If you are signed up, that’s good! If you only receive SHIBA Medicare News, you will miss out on some information, so we recommend you subscribe to News Flash too.
  • Only SHIBA staff can add or make changes to your SHIBA Medicare News account, but you should be able to unsubscribe yourself if you wish.
  • We’ll update the list monthly to add new volunteers or staff and delete names of people who’ve retired or moved on and forgot to unsubscribe themselves.
  • If you have questions, send an email to shiba@oic.wa.gov. Please put “SHIBA Medicare News” in the subject line.

STARS password reset requirements start June 1

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) is reinstating 90-day password reset requirements for STARS access. This means that every 90 days the system will prompt you to change your password.

This requirement will take effect May 31, so when you log in on June 1 you’ll likely need to reset your password.

Depending on when your account was created, your password reset will vary according to the following:

  • If your account was created before March 19, 2018, the system will prompt you to change your password on June 1, 2020, regardless of any password changes made via My Account prior to June 1, 2020.
  • If your account was created after March 19, 2018, you will not be prompted to change your password until 90 days after your first log in after June 1, 2020.

Passwords should be at least eight characters long and must contain a combination of:

  • Letters.
  • Numbers.
  • Special characters.

It should be different from your last five passwords.
