2015 Randy Terlicker Memorial Scholarship  

City of Lynnwood remembers 20th anniversary of fallen firefighter, Randy Terlicker.

LYNNWOOD, WA (February 17, 2015)Twenty years ago on January 5, 1995, four Seattle firefighters lost their lives while serving in the line of duty. One of those heroes was former City of Lynnwood Aquatic Supervisor, Randy Terlicker. To honor Randy’s memory, the City of Lynnwood established the Randy Terlicker Memorial Aquatics and Life Safety Scholarship to support individuals who want to follow in this "gentle giant's" footsteps and serve in life safety fields. 

Applications are now being accepted by the City of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department for the 2015 Randy Terlicker Memorial Scholarship. Individuals who are interested in earning a scholarship to obtain a lifeguard training certification are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements: be between the ages of 15 – 20 years old, live within the Edmonds School District boundaries, have a qualified income, and meet the swimming qualification for lifeguard training. Scholarships will be determined by the following selection criteria: eligibility requirements, completed application form, and demonstration in a letter of interest of a commitment to high standards of excellence, a desire to improve self and how they will fulfill Randy’s legacy. The scholarship committee will be awarding up to fifteen recipients in 2015. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. The Scholarship Committee will be hosting a Celebration Event to remember Randy’s legacy and raise money for the scholarship fund. The Celebration event will be from 7 – 8pm on Friday, February 27 at the Lynnwood Recreation Center and will feature a small program including guest speakers, Colleen Terlicker (Randy’s mom) and Lynnwood Fire Chief Scott Cockrum. 

Donations are currently being accepted for the scholarship fund. All donations accepted at the event will directly benefit a scholarship recipient with 100% proceeds used for future scholarship awards. Donations made at the event can be made by cash, check or credit card. Individuals who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund may make checks payable to:  Randy Terlicker Memorial Scholarship Fund, and mail to the City of Lynnwood – Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Arts Department, Attn: Sarah Olson at PO Box 5008, Lynnwood, WA  98046-5008.  

About Randy Terlicker Memorial Aquatic & Life Safety Scholarship

The scholarship program was established by the Lynnwood City Council in 1995.  This program was established to commemorate the life of Randy Terlicker and his dedication to aquatics and life safety. Terlicker was the Lynnwood Aquatics Supervisor from 1988 to 1990.  In 1990, he became a Seattle Firefighter, and continued to teach Water Safety Instructor classes for the City.  Randy lost his life firefighting in the line-of-duty in January 1995.  A memorial plaque and blue spruce tree were dedicated in October 1995 at the Lynnwood Recreation Center in Randy’s honor.
