Edmonds Community College LEAF School and Snohomish Tribe of Indians honored at City Council meeting.
The City of Lynnwood recognized the Edmonds Community College Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School and the Snohomish Tribe of Indians for their extraordinary efforts in the environmental and cultural restoration of Lynnwood’s Gold Park at the June 10, 2013 City Council meeting.
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Director Lynn Sordel presented certificates of appreciation to Dr. Thomas Murphy, EdCC Anthropology Professor, and Sue Hall, representing the Snohomish Tribe of Indians (shown in above photo).
The LEAF School sponsors service-learning opportunities for students and community members in partnership with local tribes, government agencies and non-profit organizations, specializing in projects that use traditional ecological knowledge to help make our communities more sustainable.
In 2010 the LEAF School students began with removal of invasive plant species that threatened the fragile environment of the 6.44-acre park and replanted with over 160 native plant species. With the Snohomish Tribe, they designed and installed an ethnobotanical garden, named Stolja Ali: Place of Medicine Ethnobotanical Garden. This garden showcases native plants and the history of their uses, interpreting the ecological knowledge of the Lushootseed-speaking Coast Salish tribes.
The LEAF School and the Snohomish Tribe continue to make a difference at Gold Park. On community service days (Global Youth Services Day Make a Difference Day, Earth Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service) over 5,500 hours have been logged by over 750 volunteers from the Edmonds and Everett Community Colleges, University of Washington, Global Peace Youth Corps, United Way, AmeriCorps, Boeing, the Snohomish Tribe of Indians, and the Lynnwood community.
Funding has been provided by grants from State Farm Youth Service America, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hazel Miller Foundation, Edmonds Community College Foundation, Washington Campus Compact, Oregon Campus Compact, Learn and Serve America, the Corporation for National and Community Service, Campus Compact, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
