Amazon has long operated under four guiding principles: customer obsession, passion for invention, operational excellence, and long-term thinking. These values now drive the company’s sustainability strategy as it works toward its pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Cutting Waste Across Operations
To minimize waste, Amazon uses a three-step approach: prevent, reduce, and reuse. When waste can’t be avoided, recycling and composting take priority over disposal.
In 2024, Amazon diverted 85 percent of its operational waste from landfills, with 83 percent recycled or composted. Much of this comes from cardboard and wood, which are nearly 100 percent recycled. To achieve these results, Amazon partners with more than 350 service providers to recycle materials such as PPE, pallets, and stretch wrap.
The company also avoided the use of 85 million disposable wood pallets by switching to reusable GoCarts, and it repurposed more than 310,000 assets to other sites and charities. Food waste reduction efforts included donating 81 million meals worldwide and diverting another 636,000 meals through its partnership with Too Good To Go.
Innovating With Materials
Amazon is phasing out single-use plastics where possible, turning to paper-based packaging instead. For plastics that can’t be avoided, the company is helping develop biobased, biodegradable plastics through the BOTTLE Consortium. Amazon has also partnered with Glacier AI-powered robots to improve sorting of recyclable materials and is testing bioplastic produce bags in its Fresh stores.
Smarter Packaging Solutions
Amazon continues to improve how products are packaged and shipped. Its Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) program, which allows items to ship in their original brand packaging, accounted for 12 percent of shipments in 2024. The company has also rolled out paper padded mailers and new right-sized cardboard boxes that reduce packaging waste while still protecting products.
Looking Ahead
From rethinking packaging design to investing in recyclable bioplastics, Amazon is applying its principles of innovation and long-term thinking to sustainability. With every improvement—whether recycling more waste, reducing food loss, or making packaging easier to recycle—the company is working to shrink its environmental footprint while operating at global scale.
