Newly paved eastbound lanes of 196th ST SW at 48th Ave W
Intermittent Nighttime Road Closures
- Crews are continuing roadway repairs and repaving throughout the project corridor. This work is weather permitting.
- Crews are continuing to pave alternating eastbound and westbound lanes, in a circular “race track” fashion, starting with the curb lanes, then center, then left and turn lanes.
- Travel lanes on 196th St SW will be reduced while crews pave asphalt in the street
- Access to businesses and properties will be maintained to the greatest extent possible. Access may be temporarily restricted during this work for properties with only one driveway.
- Access to 48th Ave W, 44th Ave W, and 40th Ave W from 196th St SW will be intermittently restricted during nighttime construction while crews pave and allow cooling of the new asphalt prior to traffic on it.
- During this time, travelers should use detours to access 48th Ave W, 44th Ave W and 40th Ave W
- Through traffic on 196th St SW will be maintained
- Intermittent closures will occur between now and May 19. Access will be restored during the morning and afternoon commutes.
After 196th St SW is repaved, crews will restore the crosswalks at select intersections throughout the corridor. This will require additional nighttime road closures. More details will be shared soon.
Access to businesses and properties will be maintained to the greatest extent possible. Access may be temporarily restricted during this work for properties with only one driveway.
Please follow all pedestrian and traffic control as work progresses.
What is “Mill, Pre-Level and Overlay”?
A “mill, pre-level & overlay” is a street construction technique that requires the removal of the top layer of a street by the grinding action of a large milling machine.
Milling removes about two inches off the top layer of asphalt and provides for smooth transitions into the existing roadway. After the top layer is removed, leveling course or “pre-level” of asphalt is placed, creating a better road-ride transition. Then a new “top lift” layer of asphalt pavement called a “wearing course” is installed. The new pavement can be open to traffic after several hours to give time for the road to cool or “cure”.
