Flashing Yellow Arrows Coming to Lynnwood Traffic Signals
In an effort to increase safety for motorist and pedestrians, the City of Lynnwood has begun to install flashing yellow arrows at 32 intersections throughout the city. Installation is anticipated to be completed by June 2016.
Flashing Yellow Arrow indications at signals represent a new Lynnwood standard for permissive left-turn vehicle movements. A permissive turn is one that can be safely completed through sufficient gaps in oncoming traffic. Current locations where permissive left-turns are allowed have signs next to signals that read “Left Turn Yield on Green.” The flashing yellow arrow will replace those signs.

A flashing yellow

turning. Research conducted by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)
Project 3-54 found the flashing yellow arrow to be highly effective at reducing
driver confusion.
The implementation
of flashing yellow arrows in Lynnwood is seen as a low-cost measure with opportunity to improve motorist safety at signalized intersections. The Federal Highway Administration has approved the use of flashing
yellow arrows for nationwide use.
