We need to reopen schools now

Legislative update from Olympia

Dear Neighbor,

It is not every day that I agree with our governor, but today is one of those days. Recently, he stated that our schools should begin to reopen and with the recent announcement that teachers and childcare workers can receive the COVID-19 vaccine, I believe it is imperative that our schools reopen as soon as possible.

I recently signed a letter at the request of parents in the Lake Washington School District in asking the school board to open schools in their district.

Additionally, as of March 1, COVID-19 cases are now at level where in-person learning is recommended for all K-12 students (see map below). The data shows that we have the ability to safely reopen our schools safely.

At last check, Washington ranked 47th in the country for children in the classroom and that’s just public school, in almost all private schools, children are in learning safely in-person.

This week, Republican lawmakers proposed moving our entire state to Phase 3 – meaning schools and businesses should fully reopen. With our case numbers falling drastically and more individuals receiving the vaccine, it is time we trusted people to do what is right for their families and open our state’s economy and schools. Please remember that I am here to serve you.
