Dear Sultan residents,

As you may know, the 12th District boundaries recently changed to include a portion of Snohomish County, including the Highway 2 communities from Leavenworth to Monroe. As the new State Senator representing Sultan, I want you to know that I have appreciated the many helpful communications I have had with your Mayor Russell Wiita, the Sky Valley Chamber, and other officials regarding the issues important to your community. Thank you to everyone for welcoming me to your community.

I enjoy discussing city priorities with your officials. Pictured above are Councilmember Heidi Dawson, City Administrator Tyler Christian, Mayor Russell Wiita, and myself in the Senate Chambers.

Supporting Highway 2 improvements

Sultan officials continue to show strong leadership and collaboration in identifying a viable solution to congestion and safety issues near Sultan. The city has identified a preferred corridor improvement plan that includes several project components, which will be completed as funding is acquired. Currently, the city is working to secure funding to replace the Wagley Creek Bridge and fish culvert and also adding a two-lane roundabout at Sultan Basin Road and Highway 2. I fully support this project to improve this portion of the corridor. These exciting developments result from months of hard work by Sultan officials. I will continue to advocate for these Hwy 2 improvements among my top legislative priorities.

City leaders have identified a preferred corridor improvement plan that includes several project components, which will be completed as funding is acquired. This would include the replacement of the Wagley Creek Bridge and fish culvert and adding a two-lane roundabout at Sultan Basin Road and Highway 2. The design also includes other elements, such as roundabouts at Old Owen Road and at Main Street and expanding the highway to four lanes.

Focusing on safety and traffic flow

During the 2022 legislative session, I partnered with Highway 2 communities to sponsor Senate Bill 5603, calling for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to conduct a Highway 2 corridor study between Wenatchee and Monroe to improve traffic flow and safety. As a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, my objective was to utilize the bill to raise awareness of the significant congestion and safety challenges along the highway. With Mayor Wiita's and others' help, we made major progress with committee members, successfully emphasizing that Highway 2 challenges are a statewide issue. While transportation funding is a challenge for the 2024 session, the legislature will likely be developing its next long-term transportation plan during 2025, which is when we can make the best case for new Highway 2 funding.

Thank you to the people of Sultan for welcoming me to your community.

Sultan’s Mountain View Park

Sultan

The capital budget includes $500,000 of funding for Mountain View Park in the rapidly growing Sultan basin area in east Sultan. This funding will enable the city to apply for Recreation and Conservation Office grants and support this key phase of the overall $3 million park facility.

It was great to work with the City of Sultan and Mayor Russell Wiita to help secure $500,000 in the 2023-2025 capital budget toward funding Mountain View Park in the rapidly growing Sultan basin area on the eastern portion of Sultan. The project is expected to be approximately $3 million, and the visionary process is still in the process for this 5-acre area owned by the city. Accessing a neighborhood park, rather than traveling along Highway 2 to access parks, will make recreation more accessible for Sultan families. This park will also help to meet the growing needs of this expanded community. Plans include a year-round restroom, ADA-accessible trail, sidewalks, open meadow, a parking lot, signage, and more. The city plans to utilize this state funding, as well as its existing park improvement funding, to apply for Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office grants to complete the overall park facility.
