Sen. Keith Wagoner, R-Sedro-Woolley, on fixing breakdowns in Washington’s justice system:

“When we talk about public safety, it’s not enough to focus only on hiring and retaining law enforcement — important as that is. The job isn’t done when an arrest is made. If a case sits for months or even years because of delays in forensic testing or overwhelmed courts, justice hasn’t been served.

"We are seeing serious gaps in the system, from a backlog of thousands of toxicology cases to courtrooms stretched beyond capacity, and those delays have real-world consequences. In some cases, individuals remain on the road or in the community without proper accountability simply because the system hasn’t kept up.

"That puts families at risk and undermines confidence in our justice system. The reforms we passed are about addressing those underlying problems, expanding testing capacity, adding judicial resources, and making sure the system can keep pace, so we can deliver timely, fair outcomes and truly protect the people of Washington.”
