More than 61,000 people signed in con on the income tax bill (Senate Bill 6346) when it was heard in the Senate, but the fight against the income tax is not over. Even though three of their members joined us in voting against it, Senate Democrats passed it in the Senate.
It's now scheduled for a hearing in the House of Representatives at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the House Finance Committee.
After you helped make SB 6346 the most unpopular bill in state history, supporters of the bill gaslit those 61,000 CON sign-ins by saying they were bots. The Senate system has safeguards against bots. Those were real people, just like you, telling the majority NO on an income tax.
But Democrats didn't listen. Just like how they ignore that Washington voters have rejected an income tax 11 times.
DOESN'T THIS JUST APPLY TO HIGH EARNERS?
This 9.9% income tax applies to EVERYONE but has a temporary exemption for those who earn less than $1 million a year. It is disingenuous by the far left and special interests to brand it as a "millionaire tax." In fact, when the bill came to the Senate floor, Democrats rejected Amendment 696, which would have ensured this tax would only ever apply millionaires.
This means the tax can be expanded to apply to everyone, simply by amending it. It would not require a vote of the people.
Democrats further undermined democracy by rejecting another amendment to remove the clause that prevents the people from overturning the income tax via referendum.
Adding insult to injury, they also rejected a third amendment that would have made diapers exempt from sales tax -- despite paying lip service to the struggles of families trying to make ends meet.
And don't forget -- NOT ONE DIME of the income tax is earmarked for education or healthcare. Some Democrats respond to this by saying that more than 40% of our operating budget is spent on education. This does NOT mean that 40% of any new revenue will also be spent on education. Most of the $3.5 billion per year it will generate goes to the general fund and can be spent on anything the majority wants.
"Do the Democrats in Olympia think Washingtonians are fools?"
-Sen. John Braun
