How poverty hurts Washington state’s democracy Never in recent history have more Washingtonians needed a strong social safety net. In April, as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down whole industries, over half a million workers in our state lost their jobs. Suddenly, they and their dependents needed help to cover life’s basic expenses, from rent and utilities to food and medical care. Washington state changes COVID-19 higher ed rules in response to campus outbreaks Washington State Governor Jay Inslee announced new requirements for higher education institutions in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “We’ve seen a significant increase in the COVID infections around congregate living quarters and social gatherings, particularly around our fraternities and sororities,” he said at a virtual press conference Tuesday. Fall surge of COVID-19 is hitting Washington, state officials warn The number of COVID-19 cases in Western Washington is rising at “an alarming rate” and health officials say we might be joining the rest of the nation in a “fall surge” of the pandemic, the Washington State Department of Health said in a Tuesday news release.
