Critical Areas Ordinance - Periodic Update

Kitsap County’s 2024 Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) update is underway with opportunities for the public to get involved and discuss:

• Wetlands
• Streams
• Erosion Hazards
• Landslides
• Aquifer Recharge Areas
• Floodplains

The CAO, KCC Title 19, was last reviewed and updated in 2017. Critical area regulation promotes environmental protection and encourages public safety by limiting development in areas prone to natural hazards like floods and landslides. The Critical Areas Ordinance will be updated with the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update, with adoption planned in June of 2024.   

UPCOMING MILESTONES FOR PHASE ONE

• May 2023 – Virtual Kick-Off Meeting
• May 2023 – Release of Best Available Science (BAS) Report
• June 2023 – Planning Commission Work Study
• June 2023 – Board of County Commissioners Work Study
