Eroding bank and fallen trees at Scenic Beach State Park
Eroding Banks Build Beaches
Jonathan Waggoner, Coastal Engineer, explained how the "glacial legacy" of the Puget Sound basin ensures the presence of sand and gravel beaches all around our region, rather than solid rocky headlands one might find elsewhere.
At Scenic Beach State Park Jon was able to illustrate how the process of erosion contributes essential materials that maintain our beaches for our recreation and enjoyment as well as provide critical habitat for forage fish, like surf smelt and sand lance.
Adaptation Actions
While erosion is an important natural process, it can endanger shoreline property and infrastructure. We learned that shoreline armor does not necessarily provide effective long-term protection, especially given changing and hard-to-predict future conditions.
Jon and Rachel discussed alternate ways to protect properties and nearshore habitats at the same time, including managing, drainage, enhancing native vegetation, and even relocating or elevating structures when possible.
