Flu activity is on the rise in Kitsap County
Take simple steps to prevent flu and other seasonal illnesses.
KITSAP COUNTY, WA — Flu activity is increasing in Kitsap County and public health officials are urging the public to take steps to prevent the spread of influenza viruses and other seasonal illnesses.
The number of positive flu tests reported in the county ticked up this month, with 51 positive tests reported between Dec. 1 and Dec. 7. Some Kitsap schools have advised the Health District of increased absences due to flu-like illnesses. Flu activity typically peaks during winter months.
“The number of positive flu tests and emergency department visits for flu-like illnesses have increased in Kitsap, indicating flu season is underway," Kitsap Public Health District Health Officer Dr. Susan Turner said. "It’s important for people to take steps to protect themselves and their families, and it’s not too late to get a flu shot.”
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that can cause mild to severe illness. More than 200 people in Washington died from flu and complications from flu during the last flu season, and many more were hospitalized. Young children, pregnant women, people 65 years and older, and those with certain chronic health conditions are at high risk for complications from flu.
It's not just flu making people sick this time of year. Colds and other respiratory infections are also more common during fall and winter.
It's not too late to get a flu shot!
Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu. Flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Go to vaccinefinder.org to find a flu shot near you.
