Prepared not scared - Tip # 12 Preparing for a power outage

Prepared not scared 3

We have many beautiful trees here in Kitsap County, which often means power interruptions when the heavy winds begin. Extended power outages make a big impact on families, businesses and our community.

We want you to be #KitsapReady when the power goes out unexpectedly.

Tip # 12 Preparing for a power outage

Power outage

Safety tips during a power outage

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. The refrigerator will keep cold for about four hours and a full freezer will keep temperature for 48 hours. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • Use generators outdoors and away from windows. Only use portable generator when necessary. For more generator safety tips, click here
  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical charges.
  • Use alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or power dependent medical devices.

How you to prepare now

  • Stay informed through alerts. Check with your utility company to see if you can sign up for account-specific status and restoration.
  • Have supplies ready:
    • Flashlight
    • Battery/solar phone chargers
    • Battery/Hand-crank radio
    • Spare batteries
    • Enough nonperishable food and water for three days
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup.
