Prepared not scared - Tip # 10 Preparing your neighborhood and workplace

Prepared not scared 3

When disaster strikes, first responders may not be available to get to your homes and businesses right away. Your most immediate source of help will be your friends, neighbors, co-workers and even strangers who are nearby.

We want you to build knowledge and skills in your neighborhoods and places of work, so that you can be #KitsapReady if disaster strikes!

Tip # 10 - Preparing your neighborhood and workplace

Get to know your neighbors and organize

  • Start a neighborhood group - See Map Your Neighborhood for helpful tips on start-up
  • Create a neighborhood contact list
  • Identify the skills and useful equipment that you and neighbors may have to share
  • Map the neighborhood - identifying locations with natural gas and propane tanks, that need quick response.
  • Be sure to check on your most vulnerable neighbors, especially those who are blind, deaf, have mobility limitations or are medically fragile.

  • Plan and implement emergency drills & training - It is important to include earthquake drills, fire drills, CPR/First Aid, and other safety training in your place of work.
  • Build your emergency communication system for employees which includes emergency contact information and a plan on how to call or text your entire team.
  • Connect with neighboring businesses and non-profits and brainstorm how you can support each other in a disaster.
