South America's immense wildlands contain the most important reservoir of biodiversity left on Earth, operating as the heart and lungs of the planet. Yet, there has not been sufficient high-quality research into this area’s amazing biodiversity and how best to protect it. At the July Eastside Science Café, join Peter Morrison from the Pacific Biodiversity Institute as he explores how his organization spearheads and supports research and conservation efforts in these fascinating ecosystems. __________________________
Second Thursday Art and Wine Walk Join us on the second Thursday of each month for a fabulous art and wine walk at the Kirkland Warehouse Wineries. Each winery—Northwest Cellars, Skylite Cellars, Waving Tree Winery—will have a different artist in their space, with snacks, music ... and of course, wine! Come and join us for a fun evening—this month Northwest Cellars features the photography of Chris Rusnak who specializes in animal photography. _____________________________
Join us for a fun evening of contra dances (social dance originally from New England) including a few circle and square dances. Laura Me’ Smith is the caller for our dances along with a guest band presenting traditional folk music. Walk-through provided for every dance. Attending with a partner is not necessary. Beginner instruction at 7:30 PM with dance beginning at 8:00 PM. Whether it is a Sherlock Holmes adaptation or an episode of Harry Nile, you can always expect a double-bill with Imagination Theater—suspense, adventure, and of course, mystery! _____________________________ Studio East presents This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father – violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.
