Kirkland community invited to Fire Station 25 ribbon cutting ceremony and open house September 9
A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house will be held at 12:30 p.m. on September 9, 2018 to celebrate the reopening of Kirkland Fire Station 25 located at 12033 76th Pl NE, Kirkland, WA 98034. The public will also have an opportunity to tour the newly renovated station.
There is parking along 76th Pl NE, however, since parking is limited, those attending the ceremony and open house are encouraged to walk, bus or carpool. Read more in the online press release.

City Hall for All on October 6 welcomes Kirkland residents to connect
The City of Kirkland will host its second City Hall for All event on October 6, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall, 123 5th Ave. The event will highlight how the City of Kirkland is a safe, inclusive and welcoming place for all people, and it will feature many opportunities for community members to learn about City and community resources and to provide feedback to the City on various topics. City Hall for All is free, family-friendly and open to all. Refreshments will be served. An updated listing of event attractions will be posted to the “City Hall for All” website in the coming weeks.

Volunteers needed for upcoming projects and events
Cross Kirkland Corridor Cleanup: Volunteers are needed to help keep the Cross Kirkland Corridor looking its best. On Monday, August 27, from 9 to 11 am, a work party will meet next to Discount Tire at 12410 NE 124th St. Parking is available in the northwest corner of the Discount Tire lot. Bring water to drink and wear long pants, long sleeves, sturdy traction shoes, and leather gloves if you have them (extras are available). Tools are provided. Volunteers under 18 years of age will need signed parent permission. Waiver forms and more information can be found at ckcvolunteers.weebly.com.
‘Crossing Kirkland’ Citywide Block Party Helpers: Volunteers are needed for Crossing Kirkland 2018, the second installment of the citywide block party along the CKC. The for-neighbors-by-neighbors event debuted in 2017 and drew more than 1,500 visitors with a mix of food trucks, games, craft projects, community organizations, and other activities. The 2018 event will occur on Saturday, September 8 from 11 to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help set-up and run stations and activities. Every volunteer gets a free t-shirt. Kirkland Police Explorers Benefit Car Show Helpers: Volunteers are needed for the annual car show on September 8 that benefits the Kirkland Police Youth Explorers program. Set-up volunteers help with décor and arrangement (no heavy lifting) throughout the venue—followed by overseeing the coffee/doughnuts area replenishment and clean-up. BBQ helpers move prepared items from the kitchen to serving area, food replenishment and tear-down of food area at the end. Finally, tear-down helpers assist staff to pack up and clean up. Join Startup 425, the King County Library System, and seasoned professionals from SCORE Small Business Counseling for a series of workshops focused on bringing your ideas to reality, from developing a business plan to crafting a financing and marketing strategy. Each session will focus on a different aspect of the startup process, and participants may choose to attend one, multiple, or all sessions, depending on individual needs and interests. All workshops are FREE! Startup 425 is a collaborative effort between the cities of Kirkland, Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah and Renton to expand entrepreneurship opportunities across the Eastside. Outdoor recreation activities canceled for August 23 due to poor air quality
Due to poor air quality caused by smoke from regional wildfires, the City of Kirkland has canceled or postponed all outdoor recreation activities for today, August 23, 2018. This is the fourth day this week that outdoor activities have been canceled. The Peter Kirk Pool is closed for the day. No lifeguards will be on duty at Waverly Beach or Juanita Beach. Houghton Beach is currently closed to swimming due to unsafe water conditions. Indoor recreation programs will continue to run on schedule.
Decisions about City of Kirkland outdoor recreation activities will be made on a daily basis depending on air quality conditions. If outdoor activities are canceled, the City will post information about the closure to the City’s website, Facebook page and Twitter account.

Neighborhood safety project ideas accepted through September
The City’s Neighborhood Safety Program (NSP) is accepting ideas for projects that will improve the safety and livability in neighborhoods throughout the City. Kirkland residents are encouraged to submit their ideas through the Capital Improvement Projects’ “Suggest-a-Project” database on the City of Kirkland website.
Examples of projects are bike lanes or trails; new crosswalks; improved crosswalk ramps, crosswalk islands, and rapid flashing; beacons; signage, parking, and pedestrian “bump outs” at intersections; traffic islands; radar signs; gravel trails; sidewalks; and street lighting. Projects submitted through September will be considered for the 2019 funding cycle.

Tourism Development Committee is seeking applicants
The City of Kirkland has three vacancies on the Tourism Development Committee. There is currently one vacancy for a representative of organizations involved in activities collecting lodging tax revenue, and two vacancies for representatives of organizations involved in activities authorized to be funded by lodging tax revenue. To learn more about the Committee and obtain the community service application, go to the Current Recruitment Positions page, or call the City Clerk’s Office at 425-587-3190. Members of the Tourism Development Committee are appointed by the City Council. The committee generally meets monthly as needed. This position is open until filled.

Be ready to help your community in an emergency
The Kirkland Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Course begins September 10, 2018, at Kirkland City Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. Learn all about personal preparedness, light search and rescue, fire suppression, disaster medical and much more. This hands-on course is informative and fun. You will be ready to help your family and your neighbors when disaster strikes. Students will attend eight weeks of instruction followed by a required simulation drill. The cost for Kirkland residents is $35/ $50 for non-residents. Kirkland Salary Commission to discuss mayor and council member salaries
The Salary Commission is holding a meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to receive public input and discuss possible adjustments to the salaries of the Mayor and Councilmembers. Labor strike delays contractor work on Sixth Street South, 120th Avenue Northeast
A strike impacting Western Washington this week by the International Operating Engineer’s Union, Local 302, has stalled progress on two of Kirkland’s construction projects, including the water main beneath 120th Avenue Northeast and the new four-way traffic signal project at Kirkland Way and Sixth Street South. Online open house previews plans for new I-405 interchange in Kirkland
The Washington State Department of Transportation is moving forward with designing a new option for travelers to access Interstate 405 in the Totem Lake area. Community members can learn more about these plans by visiting an online open house that launched on Monday, August 13.
WSDOT’s plans include a new on-ramp to northbound I-405 and a new off-ramp from southbound I-405 at Northeast 132nd Street. The design includes improved pedestrian and bike connections separated from motorized traffic, as well as roundabouts at two intersections. The improvements are expected to open to traffic in 2023. The comment section of the online open house is open through Sunday, August 26.
