Find out more about the Gun Safety and Community Safety Town Hall
The City is hosting a Town Hall event on June 20, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Washington High School Theater (12033 NE 80th St). The Town Hall is one of several community engagement actions from Council Resolution R-5312, which was adopted by the Council on May 1, 2018, and relates to gun safety and community safety.
The Council wants to hear ideas from the community on actions the City might undertake to promote responsible gun ownership and reduce gun violence in order to keep Kirkland safe. They want to know what you think about:
- Improved enforcement of existing laws and regulations
- Education and training programs to support responsible firearm ownership
- Mental health support and initiatives
- State and local legislation on firearm safety
The City will also be gathering public input on this topic in other ways possibly including interviews, focus groups and a survey.
To find out more information about the Town Hall, including an FAQ section, please visit this informational webpage.

The Kirkland Police Department seeks parade enthusiasts and BBQ assistants
You can be a part of the Kirkland Police Department parade entry in this year’s Kirkland 4th of July Parade on Wednesday, July 4. You would walk alongside the police parade vehicle and hand-out written information to parade goers who line the parade route.
You would be needed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and would be required to walk and stand for the duration of the parade, including up to 30 minutes at the pre-parade staging site. Please wear good walking shoes (no sandals), clothing for weather conditions and bring a filled water bottle. The Police Department will also provide bottled water. Volunteers must be ages 18+, although minors age 12+ may volunteer alongside a parent. Volunteers are welcome to the Heritage Hall BBQ afterward.
Helpers are also needed for tear-down of the Kirkland Police Department Post-Parade BBQ that occurs at Heritage Hall (111 Waverly Way, Kirkland 98033). The Police Department will need two volunteers from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. to assist City staff with clean-up and tear down after the BBQ event.
These are City of Kirkland activities. To register to volunteer for either of these, contact Patrick Tefft ptefft@kirklandwa.gov. For more information, contact Patti Ball pball@kirklandwa.gov.

Keep your recyclables clean, dry, empty and loose
Lately, recycling markets like China are requiring cleaner recyclables. That means everyone needs to put only items that are truly recyclable in their recycling carts and to keep their recyclables clean. The biggest quality problems are caused by plastic bags and packaging, food and liquid in the recycling.
Everything you put in your recycling cart should be:
-
Clean - rinse food residue if possible, otherwise scrape thoroughly
-
Dry - keep cart lid closed, don't leave cardboard out in the rain overnight
-
Empty - pour out liquids, scrape out food
-
Loose - do not put your recycling in plastic bags, place all items loose in your cart
To help get the word out to residents about these quality standards, Waste Management has started to tag recycling carts that clearly contain trash items like plastic bags. If your WM recycling driver notices plastic bags or other trash in your recycling cart, the driver will leave you an "Oops" tag on your cart explaining what the problem was and may not pick up your cart that week. After removing the plastic bags, you can put your recycling out for pick-up the following week.
There is no cost for extra recycling in Kirkland, so if you have more recycling than will fit in your cart the next week, you can put out extra recyclables in your own personal can (labeled Recycling) or in a cardboard box (labeled Recycling). To ensure extra recyclables remain dry, please don't leave them out overnight if it's raining.
Please recycle only items listed in our Recycling Guide (pdf). If you’re not sure whether something is recyclable, please contact Kirkland’s recycling team at recycle@kirklandwa.gov or (425) 587-3812 with questions. Thank you for your help keeping our recycling system working!
