King County Executive Dow Constantine transmitted a policy to the King County Council that will allow young people under age 19 to ride transit at no cost starting later this summer.
In his State of the County address last month, Executive Constantine touted the great work of King County Metro and acknowledged key investments for the future, including the Free Youth Transit Pass that will connect youth to the freedom of transit throughout our region. The proposed free youth transit pass builds on King County’s many years of success in providing ORCA passes to middle and high school students during the school year, and also stretching into summertime for those who most need travel support.
Seattle Public School students can ride free this summer using their current school-issued ORCA card; high school students in the rest of King County who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch can sign-up online for a free summer ORCA pass. Any youth, including students, who currently have an ORCA card, should plan to hold onto it and begin using it in the fall as their Free Youth Transit Pass – any expiration dates will be extended.
Metro Pride! Operator Johnathon Futch selected as Grand Marshal of 2022 Pride Parade
Pride Month celebrates the history and accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities throughout the world. For Metro Operator Johnathon Futch, Pride 2022 is an opportunity to lead the celebration as one of the Grand Marshals of Seattle’s 48th Annual Pride Parade through downtown Seattle Sunday, June 26.
Selected to represent the essential workers on the job throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnathon received his ceremonial sash at Metro’s Central Base from Community Grand Marshal Gaysha Starr.
“This is a great honor, representing so many communities in one parade,” said Futch. “There were so many essential workers, workers who didn’t hesitate to stay with their jobs because they knew they were providing vital services. I’m proud to represent my Metro family, and very proud to help celebrate and recognize those in the LGBTQIA+ community who helped perform these services every day.”
Metro & SDOT want to hear from you on the future of Route 40
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and King County Metro have been working in partnership on the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project. The goal of the project is to reduce bus travel times by 5-10% during peak periods, improve transit service reliability, and make it safer and easier to access transit.
We are launching an Online Open House and survey to collect feedback on the updated design concepts. Please go to the “Share your Feedback” tab and give us your thoughts. You can visit through 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 19.
Remember, “It’s a great day to ride Metro” to get to events and activities where there is often traffic congestion and limited parking.
