Native America Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to learn and honor the indigenous people who were the original stewards of the land we reside upon today. So often, indigenous history, culture, and customs are left out of lessons taught and stories told. A meaningful way to learn more about the land we inhabit is to visit museums, patronize indigenous-owned businesses, read books and articles by indigenous authors, and take in the numerous indigenous landmarks throughout our region.

Mark McLaughlin Day, Friday Nov. 26
This day is in honor of Mr. McLaughlin, who was killed in the line of duty Nov. 27, 1998, while driving Route 359. He was shot and his bus plunged from the Aurora Bridge at 3:20 p.m. One other passenger died, the shooter took his own life and 32 passengers were injured.
McLaughlin was 44 when he was killed. He joined Metro in 1979 and was a transit operator for 19 years. Coworkers called him a simple, humble man, a gentle giant who was known for handing out bubblegum to his passengers.

Metro's Operators of the Month of Sept. and Oct.
Every month, operators from King County Metro’s seven transit bases select their fellow drivers for their positive contributions to Metro and recognize them as Operators of the Month. The operators selected demonstrate safe driving skills, show courteous and helpful attitudes toward customers, and pay conscientious attention to attendance, appearance, and discipline.
Please join us in congratulating them. The Operators of the Month have the privilege of coming together later to vote on who among them will be Metro’s Operator of the Year!
See the winners on our Metro Matters blog.
