Transit Alert Update – Expect Seattle area transit delays and possible temporary reroutes during multiple May Day events, including an afternoon Mariners game

On Wednesday, May 1, from about 1:00 PM until possibly late evening, transit service is likely to be significantly affected by multiple May Day events in and around downtown Seattle, including both planned and unplanned rallies and marches and a 3:40 PM Mariners game.

An update to the Workers & Immigrants march route information is that it is expected to travel via 20th Av S, E Yesler Way, 12th Av, Madison St, Broadway, E Pine St, then 6th and 7th avenues to Stewart St, with stops along the way for rallies.

Expect transit and traffic delays due to traffic, crowds and congestion associated with these events.

Event and any brief transit reroute start and end times and other details are subject to change.

It is not possible to know where or when all the impacts of various events will occur.

Transit riders and commuters who are not taking part in Wednesday’s events are advised to know what their alternatives are, sign up for Transit Alerts for major updates, plan ahead, revise plans if needed, allow plenty of time and be prepared for delays or other unpredictable service disruptions.

During major service disruptions real time apps and information signs may not be able to accurately predict when buses will arrive at stops. All transit riders should be prepared for delays and allow plenty of extra time for travel on Wednesday.

Planned May Day events
May Day March for Workers & Immigrant Rights
This planned march begins at Judkins Park at approximately 1:00 PM and is expected to travel via 20th Av S, E Yesler Way, 12th Av, Madison St, Broadway, E Pine St, then 6th and 7th avenues to Stewart St, with stops along the way for rallies.

March and rally start and end times, as well as routing, are subject to change.

Other May Day events
There are other planned and possibly unplanned events on May Day with less specific information available.

Possible traffic congestion is expected near Westlake Park and Seattle Central College on Broadway at various times throughout the afternoon.

Other transit service in the Seattle area may be delayed or temporarily rerouted by these events. Delayed service in one area may create delays in other areas.

Mariners home stand
The Seattle Mariners are home at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday with a 3:40 PM start time.

Game crowds combined with May Day event crowds may cause additional delays in transit service in and around the SODO, Stadium and Pioneer Square areas.

Seattle Streetcar service on May Day
Both the First Hill and South Lake Union streetcars may experience service delays along portions of their routes due to May Day events.

Streetcars will not operate on streets that are blocked by event participants.  Check for updates on the signs at streetcar stations.

Transit service during unexpected or civic events
In areas where there are transit service disruptions due to crowds, traffic, weather or civic events, transit riders are advised to
- Be aware of conditions in their immediate vicinity, such as street closures, detours, police directions, etc.
- Be prepared for delays or to make revisions to travel plans, such as traveling at a different time or using a different bus stop or
  route, depending on specific circumstances.
- Be prepared for unexpectedly revised traffic or routing, and for delays in  transit service.
- Know the alternate stops or routes that may be in the vicinity of their starting points and destinations.

Such events may be scheduled or unexpected, and may disrupt normal travel patterns or activities.

While every effort is made to keep riders informed of Metro’s service status, depending on the time and the nature of such events, Metro may not be able to provide real-time information or service updates via email or text.

Metro will also be following police direction or other applicable protocols, with safety as the first concern, and will work to maintain or restore service as soon as possible.

Event start and end times and other details may be unknown or subject to change.
