Thank You, Marlin

PSERN has reached another milestone with the announcement that Marlin Blizinsky will be retiring effective December 31, 2018. Marlin has faithfully and successfully served King County in multiple capacities over the past 25 years. His initial work for the county was to negotiate franchise agreements working with cable TV operators allowing them to utilize the County’s right of ways (think roads and highways). As a result, not only did Marlin focus on reaching a fair deal, but in the process he created a new service called the King County Institutional Network (“I-Net”). The I-Net is a fiber optic network with thousands of miles of fiber the County uses. Today, this fiber is part of the backbone of the King County Wide Area Network and provides internet and networking service to organizations throughout the county.

After a short stint with Microsoft, Marlin was hired in 2008 to be the first full time employee of PSERN. His initial assignment had him reaching out to staff and elected officials not only in King County but in three surrounding counties on regional objectives for the emergency radio communications system. From there, Marlin began drafting the foundational documents that created the PSERN Project. Through a handful of ordinances and several Interlocal Cooperation Agreements, the PSERN Project was conceived. Once the project was formed and funded, Marlin’s role changed to focus on gaining legal access to the land that the project needed for radio sites. His work on leases was pivotal in allowing construction and implementation activities to begin.

Through these achievements Marlin will forever have a significant legacy in King County. On a daily basis, Marlin has brought a quirky sense of humor, easy going demeanor, depth of legal knowledge, vision, and devotion to work. We are sad to see Marlin depart, but are simultaneously excited to know he is transitioning to a new phase in his life.

We sincerely thank Marlin for his contributions and service to the people of King County and wish him well in his next phase of life.
