Sword Ferns and Western Bleeding Hearts By Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle
It’s a great time to get out and discover Kent’s public art collection. The City Art Program brings artwork into public spaces to beautify neighborhoods, parks, buildings, and streetscapes, as well as create a sense of place and support economic development.
This week we’re featuring two hand-forged steel sculptures at Kent City Hall. Artists Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle were commissioned to create the artworks for concrete niches on the east and west sides of the building.
|
|
The spaces were formerly windows that had to be filled in for seismic upgrades. The sculpture on the east side wall is an enlarged portrait of the native plant, Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum). Western Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra Formosa) is featured on the West-facing wall.
Visit City Hall, located at 220 4th Ave South, and take a photo of yourself with “Sword Ferns” and “Western Bleeding Hearts.” Share it on Facebook or Instagram and tag it with #KentArts!

SILVER LININGS Online Exhibit
2020 has been quite a year! In this environment of bad news headlines, it can be challenging to find and focus on the positive, but that’s exactly what many of us are doing. It is impressive and inspiring to hear about the “silver linings” people are finding during these difficult times. We want to see the creative expression of YOUR silver linings. Is it more time with your family? Learning a new skill? Taking up a new hobby? Resetting your priorities? Show us your joy!
The exhibit is open to any creative endeavor – photographs, paintings, poems, recipes, short films, songs, or stories – anything you can dream up. Submit your projects as part of the online 2020 – SILVER LININGS exhibit at KentCreates.com. The top 5 winners will receive a $200 honorarium, and their work will appear in the featured carousel on the Kent Creates homepage!

Did you miss our ReLEAF event? Never fear, our Arbor Day event is almost here! Although Arbor Day is officially in the spring of each year, trees like to be planted in the autumn so that's when we celebrate in Kent! This year, our Arbor Day event will be held at Clark Lake Park. Although we will not be planting any trees at this year's event, we will be caring for trees that were planted at previous events. Plus, all volunteers will leave with a free tree to plant at home! We hope you'll join us!
DATE: November 14, 2020
TIME: 9-11am, rain or shine
Events will be held for individual groups of 5 or less with no more than 30 volunteers total. Social distancing measures will be in place, and all volunteers will be subject to a temperature check prior to the event. Please note that masks and/or face coverings must be worn throughout the duration of the event.

Fishing Report
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, our westside lowland lakes start to cool off and rejuvenate the trout population. The fish will move into shallower water and feed heavily to bulk up for winter. Several lakes also get fall plants of trout. Locally you can visit Meridian, Wilderness, Morton, Shadow, Spring, Shady, Steel, Five Mile, and North Lakes in search of them.
Check out the WDFW website for regulations and fish plant information.
