Over the past few weeks, I have heard some hateful rhetoric surrounding the planned Rainbow Steps art installation at Kenmore City Hall. The art installation, which was approved at the May 22 City Council Meeting, will paint the exterior stair risers (not the step flats) at City Hall’s main entrance with a depiction of the nationally recognized Chevron Pride Flag.
The Kenmore City Council collectively supports this art installation, which celebrates Kenmore’s diverse and inclusive community. The colorful new rainbow steps will spread the message that everyone is welcome in Kenmore, and hate is not welcome here.
The City of Kenmore stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community not just during Pride month in June, but year-round. We condemn ALL acts of discrimination and hate. Especially now, when our LGBTQ+ neighbors are increasingly under attack for who they love or how they identify, it is important for us to stand in solidarity and express publicly and loudly that they are welcome, respected, and included here in Kenmore. Our community is stronger when we welcome everyone and amplify the voices of those most marginalized in our society.
I am grateful to the Arts of Kenmore and the Kenmore Urban Pride Committee for proposing and facilitating this project, which will raise awareness for the LGBTQ+ community while beautifying Kenmore’s downtown spaces. I look forward to seeing our community come together, united, for the upcoming community paint day. Everyone is welcome to help paint the rainbow steps and show their support for this project.
It is important we continue to educate and promote unity as we work to stop hate and implicit biases that impact the safety of our community. I am proud of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility work that we have accomplished together so far, but we have more work to do. I am inspired now even more to continue Kenmore’s path towards becoming a more just and inclusive city.
