Kenmore Scores Big for Walking and Bicycling

City Awarded $9.75 million for Sidewalk and Bike Lane Grants

KENMORE, Wash. – Late last month, the State Legislature adopted a budget and ended its 2023 legislative session. The State’s newly adopted transportation budget includes $9.75 million in sidewalk and bike lane grants for the City of Kenmore.

“We hit the motherload,” said Mayor Nigel Herbig. “These grants will go a long way toward walking and biking safety and comfort, and I’m grateful to our State Representatives Duerr and Kloba and State Senator Stanford for advocating for this funding on Kenmore’s behalf.”

The City of Kenmore will receive sidewalk and bicycle lane grants for the following projects:

  1. 80th Avenue from Bothell Way to 185th Street: New sidewalk on both sides of the street. New bike lanes on both sides.
  2. 73rd Avenue from 192nd Street to 201st Place: New sidewalk on one side of the street. New bike lanes on both sides.
  3. 192nd Street from 73rd Avenue to 75th Avenue: New sidewalk on one side of the street.
  4. Arrowhead Drive from 151st Street to 64th Avenue: New sidewalk on one side of the street and traffic calming.
  5. 84th Avenue from 150th Street to 155th Street. New sidewalk on both sides of the street. New bike lanes on both sides.

“We now have the good problem of building these projects within the grants’ allotted timelines,” City Engineer John Vicente, said. “With the right planning, staffing resources, and a little luck, these new sidewalks and bike lanes should be installed in the next two to three years.”

Over the last decade, pedestrian and bicycle safety has been a top priority of the Kenmore City Council. In 2014, the City Council adopted a Target Zero resolution with a goal of zero pedestrian and cyclist serious injuries or deaths by 2025.

“I’d like to thank our City Engineer John Vicente for his hard work and initiative in applying for this sidewalk funding,” said City Manager Rob Karlinsey. “These grants will launch us another step closer toward our Target Zero goal.”
