The City of Kenmore, along with north King County partner cities of Bothell, Kirkland, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline, announces the siting of a new multi-service crisis response center dedicated to serving the behavioral health needs of community members across north and northeast King County. The new crisis center will be operated by Connections Health Solutions, a national innovator in behavioral health crisis care. The facility will be located at 11410 NE 122nd Way in Kirkland’s Totem Lake neighborhood, conveniently located near Evergreen Hospital and Highway 405. The crisis response center will be the first of its kind in King County to provide a spectrum of care services, from walk-in mental health urgent care to continued stabilization of behavioral health or substance use crises. In February, the Kenmore City Council approved a plan for funding the first phase of implementation for its Climate Action Plan and growing Housing and Human Services needs. The plan includes three new positions to support this work: a Climate Action Plan Manager to immediately begin implementing key portions of the CAP to meet Kenmore’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030; a Housing & Human Services Manager to help Kenmore residents in need and develop key community partnerships; and one additional staff member to provide administrative support on the City’s finance team. The plan includes increases in three revenue sources that will cost a typical Kenmore household an additional $11.53 per month (approximately). Kenmore residents will see the 2% increase on their natural gas utility tax and a new 10% solid waste utility tax on their bills beginning May 1. The vehicle license fee increase from $20 per year per vehicle to $40 per year per vehicle will begin as soon as mid-August, 2023. Read the full press release here.
Sound Transit has launched an online open house for the Stride bus rapid transit (BRT) project. The public can learn more about the latest 60% design for the project and provide comments through an online survey. Sound Transit will also be hosting three public meeting drop-in sessions (including one at Kenmore City Hall on March 28, from 4 pm - 8 pm) for the community to learn more about the design, ask questions, and share thoughts on future construction. Stride 3 will be a fast, frequent, and reliable bus service connecting Kenmore to light rail and other transit services. Read the press release.
Every other year, the City puts on a special “For the Love of Kenmore” event to celebrate what we affectionately call “love notes” and “cocreators.” On February 9th, City Hall was filled with Kenmore residents who love where they live—people we call cocreators. In Kenmore, a love note is not just nice words on paper. A love note is way for residents to connect with each other and to show their love for their city.
What are examples of love notes in Kenmore? There are many! To name just a few: organizing a volunteer work party at a city park; planting new trees to help wildlife habitat; organizing an event to make scarves for those experiencing homelessness; painting rocks with uplifting messages to leave around town; writing an article about something that inspires you; and so much more! Love notes come in all shapes and sizes—they can be big or tiny; temporary or long lasting. You can do any of these things and more! And the City is here to help and support you. What do you do when good food goes bad? Or when those dinner scraps aren’t suitable for the stock pot? King County Solid Waste Division wants your feedback about proposed strategies to keep more food and yard waste out of the garbage. The survey will help the county better understand how residents in different parts of the county manage waste, and help inform future policies to reduce food waste going to the landfill, protect the environment, and meet the needs of our communities. Take the anonymous online survey through April 30.

The City Council has proclaimed March 2023 as Women's History Month. Women's History Month recognizes that women from all backgrounds have played a significant role in shaping the course of our country and world, despite facing barriers and discrimination on the basis of their gender, sexual orientation, race, and ethnicity. The City makes this proclamation to honor and celebrate the women who have paved the way for progress, and to stand with women today as we work towards a more just and equitable society for all. Pictured above are some of the women who work for the City of Kenmore, wearing white and celebrating International Womens Day (March 8). Read the proclamation, or find a new book recommendation from the King County Library System's Women's History Month reading list.

Restoration Volunteer Presented with First "Root Ball" Achievement Award
On February 27, as part of the City Council's new "Where's the Fun?" standing agenda item, Tracy Banaszynski presented fellow restoration volunteer, Oliver Moffat, with the "Root Ball" Achievement Award, for digging up the largest blackberry root ball while volunteering with the Swamp Creek Habitat Restoration Project.
